Treasure case : 2009 T124 Object Date: 7th century Description: Gold mount Curved gold panel inlaid with garnet cloisonné. A small, gently curving, sub-rectangular tray set inside a cable-twist gold border. Nine garnets on waffered gold foils are inserted into the tray. The back of the mount is plain except for two areas of damage, which are likely to represent previous attachment points. Discussion: It is unclear what kind of object the small mount might have come from. There are numerous possibilities, including large disc brooches (Avent 1975), buckles or sword fittings. Non-destr…

Date: 14th - 15th century A fragment of a medieval gold badge or mount, now damaged and incomplete. On one side, a standing robed figure cradling a baby probably represents the Virgin and Child. The reverse side is difficult to interpret, but may represent a vase decorated with a cross, with what may be foliage radiating from it. The edges of the badge are engraved with fluting, and may once have included stitching holes, for attaching to clothing or as a hat badge.

TREASURE CASE : 2004 T292 Late 9th- early 10th century Anglo-Saxon gold fragment. The fragment weighs 1.1g, measures 1.5mm in width and 7mm in height, and it is slightly bent at one corner (here the filigree border is lost). The shape of the fragment suggests that the original object was cut as a cruciform pattern from a circular plate in order to give a splayed out cross with empty rounded armpits (for a similar shape, see the Beeston Tor Cave brooch, deposited c. 875 in The Making of England, no. 245a). The cross-shape was decorated with gold rather coarse filigree, which also provi…

Treasure Case : 2019 T327. Description: An incomplete, gold mount of Medieval date, c.AD 1100 - 1600. It comprises a curved frame, broken at both ends (perhaps originally annular), and a narrowed, plain extension at one edge. The frame is plain on its inner face, and bordered by a low flange before the exterior decoration. This decoration is a series of radiating, incised lines between globular pellets. The extension is sub-rectangular in shape, narrowed from the frame to its terminal and contains three circular perforations arranged around a globular pellet. A narrow, inci…

TREASURE CASE : 2021 T608 A probably complete gold mount probably of Early Bronze Age date, c.2150-1750 BC. The mount consists of a sub-rectangular thin gold sheet that has been folded at least three times, into at least four layers.  One outer layer consists of one terminal end of the mount.  This end is rounded and tapers slightly before widening again into the main body of the mount.  A fold, bending the mount completely back on itself, connects this layer to the outer layer on the opposite side of the folded mount.  This outer layer continues to widen before a…

Circular domed object made from gold, consisting of a circular back sheet, an incomplete filigree collar, and a domed upper sheet. The back sheet is 13.0mm in diameter and was probably originally flat; it is now very slightly concave, around a flat rim underneath the narrow flange running around the domed upper sheet. There are several small indentations, as if the back sheet has been poked repeatedly by a sharp point. There is one tiny circular hole close to the edge and, directly opposite and close to the edge, a tear perhaps through a second hole. The surviving hole is c. 0.6mm in …

Description: An incomplete circular gold setting, originally with a domed cloisonné garnet setting. The circular backplate is framed by a thin (0.4mm) outer and thicker (1.1mm) inner beaded wire. The thicker wire is carefully made with narrow even beads, but the thin wire has more oblique beads and many Aquätorschnitte, no doubt reflecting the difficulty of manufacturing such extremely fine beaded wire. Part of the narrower wire has broken away and survives loose. The central cloisonné setting has an outer upright strip which in side view is slightly bent over to retain the garn…

Description: An incomplete early medieval gold setting, probably once attached to a larger object. The setting is circular and consists of a sheet gold back-plate to which has been soldered a composite collar, made from a gold strip set edge-on to the plate, and surrounded by a single strand of gold beaded wire. The beaded wire is noticeable worn. The back-plate is pressed inwards slightly and has a small oval tear towards one edge. The original inlay, probably glass or a gemstone such as garnet, is missing. Treasure Case 2009 T647: British Museum Report: Object Date: 7th century Description: Cloisonné mount Rectangular cloisonné mount consisting of a warped, box-shaped, sturdy frame into which geometric cells, now mostly damaged, are set. Most of the garnets have fallen out, but there are two left. One is broken and barely wedged into its cell, the other one has sunk in its cell, but its backing foil is in place and clearly visible. The back is plain but bears the impression of the cell walls on the front. There are four rivet holes in the corners of the mount. Discussion: The…

TREASURE CASE 2005 T420 Description A narrow rectangular strip of gold, plain except for a very light ridge running along the centre of one face. Either end has a perforation slightly offset from the centre-line and about 1 mm in diameter. One end has a second, smaller perforation alongside the first. The strip is somewhat buckled all along its length and has also been pinched from side to side at two points close to the ends. Two creases are roughly equi-distant from the ends and are 34 mm apart - exactly half the full length; they suggest that the object was originally wrapped aroun…

A modern cast gold 'Crown of Thorns' mount. The hoop is cast with a textured surface of cross hatching/wriggle working with  five 'thorns' on each side; the thorns are not opposing but placed alternatively along the hoop when viewed from the side. The thorns are angled at 45°'s and flow in the same direction (like waves), the thorns on the opposing side facing the other direction. There is evidence of wear on areas of the outside edge of the hoop where the textured surface is worn smooth, the worn areas are almost at opposing sides. There is…
