Gold finger ring with a slightly misshapen hoop, which broadens at the shoulders to meet the bezel. The bezel is comprised of a rectangular red glass to imitate a precious stone, in a rectangular setting. Arched decoration surrounds the setting. The bezel of this ring has close parallels with 2004 T485 (see Treasure Annual Report 2004, no.369), but this ring is a 19th-century imitation of a medieval-style ring. Therefore, this is classed as not Treasure.

Treasure case : 2008 T700 Gold ring, the hoop broken at the back, formed of a thin flat band, with stylised scrolls at the shoulder, the oval bezel with a monkey in relief. There are traces of white enamel on the shoulders and green and black (?) on the bezel. While this ring conforms to 16th century shape and decoration, the use of a flat hoop and bezel, with metal of this thinness, is extremely unusual and has no parallels in the British Museum collection. While we cannot rule out the possibility that it may be 16th-17th century, the balance of probability is that it is no…

Gold finger ring Date: probably 17th Century Description: A gold finger ring, which has been bent and distorted out of shape. The hoop has a circular section, which widens towards the shoulders. The upper surfaces of the shoulders are decorated with an incised cross-hatched design inside a linear border. The bezel has a wide U-shaped with turned up lips on either side. In the centre of this there is a double claw, which would have held a stone or gem. This is now missing. The claws each have a collar around them. The cross-hatched decoration suggests a date in the 17th Century.

A complete post-medieval gold posy ring. The posy ring is circular in plan with a chunky D-shaped section. There is no evidence of a join on the hoop. The exterior of the ring is undecorated. The interior is inscribed with a small shield and the text "Wee Joyne our harts in god" the text is written in a serif type of lettering. Maker's mark: a cursive letter H in a shield Discussion: The identical mark occurs on four rings in the BM, two of them are posy rings (1961m1202.32 and AF.1322), the other two are signet rings of classic 16th-17th century type (Dalton 605 and 614), see images …

A gold finger ring with a D-shaped section, no joint is evident in the hoop of the ring. The exterior of the hoop has been decorated with an elaborate floral design, with scrolling foliage and flowers. Inside some of the angles a trace amount of a black substance can be seen, it is therefore possible that the finger ring may have been enameled with black enamel. The edges of the hoop have a slightly raised rim. The interior of the hoop is inscribed with serifed capitals DESIRE.HATH.NO.RESTE. The stops are formed from small crosses. The area between the beginning and the end of the ins…

TREASURE CASE : 2005 T379 Thin gold D-section hoop, the exterior engraved with a skull flanked by cross-hatching with traces of black enamel. The interior inscribed in lower case: 'Prepare to follow' with a monogram, possibly IR or JR. This is a characteristic type of 17th century memorial ring. Rings commemorating the execution of Charles commonly bear the inscription 'Prepared be to follow me' with a CR monogram. The monogram on this ring is not easy to interpret, but one possible reading is IR or JR, the curved elements at the top being read as either the bar of the J or as a …

A 19th Century gold finger ring. It is definitely 19th Century due to its shape and decoration. The ring survives intact, but has lost some of it decoration. The hoop is distorted. The shoulders are decorated with depressed cells, which terminate half way around the loop with an inwards pointing triangle. This cell continues around the bezel and encapsulates the bezel itself. Traces of black enamel remain and judging by the rough surface of the cell it would appear that this enamel would have extended across the entire area. The depressed cell also gives the bezel the appearance of h…
