A complete early medieval Merovingian gold tremissis, 'mint and moneyer' or 'National Series' broadly dating c.AD580-670 although this coin may date c.620-640, mint unknown but probably Austrasia/Frisia (roughly encompassing parts of NE France, N Germany and the Low Countries), cf. Belfort nos 3016, 3029-32, MEC1, nos 510-11. Refs: Belfort 1892: 380, 383; Grierson and Blackburn 1986: 125, pl. 24. A late 6th- or 7th- century Merovingian gold tremissis, struck circa 590-670. Mint of Metz (METTI[S?]), moneyer uncertain. This coin is also recorded on the Early Medieval Coin Corpus as 2015.0131. The coin depicts a diademed bust right with the inscription METTI[S?]CI[V?]E[T?]I. The reverse depicts a version of a chi-rho with a v-shaped motif in one angle. The inscription is partially legible and reads ANSVO[ ]. Diameter 13mm, weight 1.24g. Cf Belfort 2953-60; Prou 937-943. Possibly a contemporary imitation.

A gold Merovingian tremissis of the Nietap type (from Frisia), dating to circa 630-40. The coin is small, circular, 6mm in diameter and 3mm thick. The rim of the flan is irregularly-shaped, showing irregular panels caused by the initial casting of the flan or by secondary hammering. The obverse bears the motif of a double cross, formed of a single vertical strokes with two crossing bars or, if viewed at 90 degrees, like an H with a single horizontal stroke and two vertical bars. A Merovingian gold tremissis; no parallel in Belfort or Prou. The mint is uncertain; the coin appears to read OTAREGCA but this does not match any known mint. The moneyer however is Deairenasea, who is also known from the mint Plailly, (Oise) France (see, for example, EMC 2007.0069). Late 6th or 7th century, c. 590-670 AD.
