An inscribed gold 'North-East Coast' stater attributed to the Corieltavi. The coin is inscribed DVM[NO] the obverse and 'TIGIR-SENO' on the reverse. Where two names are given on British Iron Age coins they are thought to be united dynastically. In this specific case the father of TIGIR-SENO might have had a name beginning with the letters DVMNO (for example Dumnovellaunos or Dumnocoveros).

A Roman gold finger-ring, crushed and severely distorted. Its tripartite construction comprises a symmetrical pair of slender bands flanking, and fused to, a central beaded wire. At the bezel the outer edge of both bands expands to form a sub-triangular field. This is occupied by a lozenge-shaped cell formed from beaded wire with a single pellet at each end of the long axis. A further two pairs of pellets flank the beaded wire either side of the lozenges. The lozenge motif is reminiscent of the cells on Roman 'Hercules club' type ear-rings and pendants, some of which are filled with e…

A gold Roman snake-head terminal from a bracelet. The head is oval in plan and plano-convex in cross-section. The head is shown semi-naturalistically and is practically flat with low relief moulding to suggest the top of the serpent's head. The reptile has a distinct nose in the form of a round bead and a central nasal ridge running back from it, flanked by two slanting ridges to represent the brows. The main part of the skull has a clear median groove. The perimeter of the head is decorated with narrow triangular grooves. Part of the neck survives which coils away from the head and a…

A Merovingian gold tremissis; no parallel in Belfort or Prou. The mint is uncertain; the coin appears to read OTAREGCA but this does not match any known mint. An Anglo-Saxon gold pendant of the seventh century. The pendant was originally flat and oval but is now bent. The pendant originally had a setting (which is likely to have been of cabochon-cut garnet or glass) held in place by way of a narrow internal lip on the front. The lip is an extension of the back-plate, folded up and decorated with two bands of beaded filigree soldered onto the surface. The outer band has larger pellets than the inner band. A narrow, ribbed suspension loop extends from the top on the reverse but is now damaged and bent backwards on itself. This loop is soldere…

A Roman gold gem-set oval mount. The rubbed-over oval box setting is encircled by a decorative flange with a symmetrical petal motif. Two small projecting open circular rings, one at either end of the long axis of the mount are fused to the back of the flange. One has been torn open, together with a slight localised distortion of the adjacent part of the flange. The oval gem appears translucent, with a very pale lilac-brown colouration. Its front face, convex and polished, is slightly worn. A bulge in the back of the box setting indicates that the back face of the gem is also convex. …

A Post-Medieval gold finger ring. The hoop is D-shaped in cross-section and gently widens on either shoulder to form a tall, pierced stop either side of a rectangular slot. The slot would have contained a setting or swivel, secured by a rivet through the stop on either side. The shoulders are decorated with foliage and pellets presumably representing grapes or berries. Examination under a microscope reveals traces of black and white enamel within the recesses of the foliage. The ring has been examined by Judy Rudoe, Curator, British Museum and Richard Blurton, Curator of South and S…
