Gold and copper alloy sword pommel. The pommel consists of a copper alloy matrix covered with heavy gold sheet. Both faces are decorated with beaded filigree wire, as are the rectangular panels on the left and right hand sides of the upper pommel surface. One face shows fair amounts of damage caused before it was discovered. A pair of copper alloy rivets remains in position at either end of the pommel. The pommel, of so called 'cocked-hat' form is of a type that can be dated to the first half of the seventh century. It belongs to Menghin's Group E high status pommels of the early 7t…

Gold sheet pommel composed of two highly stylised animals with a shared body. The pommel, which is high profiled and thin in cross-section, is made of five pieces of thick gold sheet. Two make up a double-skinned core into which the end of the tang fitted. Onto this core are soldered three smaller sheets.
