Early medieval (Anglo-Saxon) gold 'cocked hat' sword pommel, The object is sub triangular in form and sub rectangular in section. It has a curved upper surface which has a central domed area which is flanked by two sub triangular areas of filigree running to each end. These are formed of a rope like border which contains seven twisted wires. It is decorated on two sides with a filigree interlace formed of twisted wire flanked by smaller twisted wire borders. The whole object is bordered by an applied wire.

An incomplete early medieval gold pommel cap with beaded wire filigree ornament, mounted onto a copper-alloy core. The pommel is of elongated or ‘cocked-hat’ form, with one end missing. The copper-alloy core, visible from underneath, appears to be suffering badly with a blue corrosion.
The front and back faces of the pommel cap have different decoration. One face side is decorated with two beasts facing each other, their positions mirrored. Each beast is seated with its head and chest upright, a front paw raised to meet that of its opposite in the centre of the field. A ba…
