Gold and copper alloy sword pommel. The pommel consists of a copper alloy matrix covered with heavy gold sheet. Both faces are decorated with beaded filigree wire, as are the rectangular panels on the left and right hand sides of the upper pommel surface. One face shows fair amounts of damage caused before it was discovered. A pair of copper alloy rivets remains in position at either end of the pommel. The pommel, of so called 'cocked-hat' form is of a type that can be dated to the first half of the seventh century. It belongs to Menghin's Group E high status pommels of the early 7t…

Angela Evans of the British Museum provided the following report. Late 6th or early 7th century Early Medieval gold sword pommel cap of high cocked-hat form decorated with panels of beaded wire filigree. The pommel cap is damaged and distorted but retains details of both faces, the top and the side panels. Each face is divided into three panels by fillets of gold sheet arranged in the shape of an inverted Y.
