Report to H M Coroner on fragment of gold rod from Rousdon, Devon 2007 T108 Description Short length of octagonal-sectioned gold rod, broken at each end. Length 19mm; diameter 9mm; weight 17g. Identification While ornaments made from octagonal-sectioned rod are known in the Bronze Age, there is insufficient evidence to place this piece chronologically or culturally. Treasure case: 2005 T582 Very small, flat, fragment of gold with evidence of hammering, possibly relating to scrapping. Too little survives to be able to make even a tentative identification and its exact age is thus unknown although it is likely to be over 300 years old. I can confirm that this find contains a minimum of 10 per cent gold. Consequently, it qualifies as Treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996 in terms of both age and precious metal content.

Fragment of an undiagnostic gold fragment. As this was a potential treasure item, it was submitted to B.M. Ager (Curator Prehistory & Europe) for inspection and it was described thus: 'The find consists of a short, curved length of gold rod that is cut and broken at both ends and has been faceted by hammering; length, 24 mm; weight, 3.32 grams. At one end, one of the facets has been punched with a group of six dots. But the fragment is undiagnostic and undatable, so does not qualify as Treasure under the stipulated criteria of the Treasure Act.' Following his recommendation this …

Diameter 30mm x 29.5mm; thickness of wire 2.5mm; weight 13.47 grams. Composition See appended report (overleaf). Identification The composition would allow an ancient date, but the form is undiagnostic and therefore it is not possible to assign the object to a particular chronological or cultural context. Fragment of a plain gold rod. The gold rod is generally rectangular in section and is slightly bent and twisted. One end has a plain, smooth terminal; the other end has been bifacially cut. The surface is pitted; there is no decoration. The rod measures 18.42mm long, 3.48mm wide and 2.06mm thick and weighs 1.61g. Due to its undiagnostic nature it does not represent Treasure under the terms of the Treasure Act (1996).

Description: Length of thick gold wire of circular cross-section, with a fresh granular break at one end and roughly rounded at the other (possibly an old break). It is curved along its length, forming about half of a circle about 35mm in diameter. The outer surface of the curve is smooth but the inner has slight longitudinal facets, as if hammered to shape.  It is slightly crushed and bent at the rounded end, and the damage has caused cracking to the metal here. Dimensions: Unbent length 50mm, bent into half-circle measuring 32.1 x 37.9mm. Diameter of rod 4.1…

A cut fragment of a solid gold curvilinear rod. The rod has a roughly circular section and the outer edges are slightly faceted rather than smooth. Either end appears to have been cut rather than broken. 7.69mm in length, 3.61mm in width 1.06g in weight. As this fragment was discovered on a predominately 5th-7th century Anglo-Saxon settlement site it is perhaps most likely to be of this date and may be evidence of metal working. The precious metal content of this fragment fulfils the requirements of the Treasure Act in that it is greater than 10 %. Due to it's undiagnostic nature it d…

Short length of distorted gold rod of approximately circular cross-section. Both ends appear to have been cut using a chisel. Diameter of rod 5mm; weight 3.21g. Non-destructive X-ray fluorescence analysis of the surface indicated a gold content of approximately 55-58%, a silver content of approximately 40-44% and a copper content of more than 1%. Possibly a distorted solid penannular ring, the diameter of which would have been approximately 13mm. Should this be the case, the piece could fit morphologically into the category of Bronze Age penannular rings. These are generally date…

A wrought gold loop on unknown date, but probably Bronze Age. The loop is formed from wrought gold wire (th: 2.57mm) which has been bent into a drop shape. Where the ends cross, the loop has been cut, with evidence for four strikes. One cut put a wedge in the object but did not completely sever it. A second cut severed one end of the loop. The two remaining cuts are both part of the severing of the other end of the loop. The gold is probably a gold-silver alloy. There are no direct comparisons, but similar cutmarks have been observed on Bronze Age gold objects, for example no 25.1 in …

Length of gold rod with octagonal cross-section, bifacially cut at one end, the other end having a plain terminal. The piece is bent. Length 85mm; thickness 5mm; weight 2.7 grams. Identification: Analogies occur in the Bronze Age hoard of 42 gold pieces from Fitzleroi Farm, W. Sussex which included a number of elements including small complete rings and fragments of other ornament types. Octagonal- section rods were present. The analysis would be acceptable for a Bronze Age date with the proviso that the silver content is rather high. Given the lack of any datable association it is no…

Length of thick gold wire or rod. The piece has a neat circular section except where chopped at either end. Cutting or chiselling from opposite ends has given the ends a wedge-like profile. The piece is 37.25mm long, with a diameter of between 2.86mm to 2.60mm. It weighs 3.27g. The rod is undiagnostic, but its composition is consistent with a Bronze Age date.

A contorted fragment of rod of triangular section; the faces are concave and the flanges formed at their junctions are therefore acute. A moderate double twist at a point where the rod is bent appears to be a deliberate feature, but elsewhere very slight twists are likely to be due to distortion. There are no cut-marks, nor any crushing at the breaks. Maximum dimension (in contorted state) 55 mm; approximate extended length 200 mm; thickness 2.5 – 3.1 mm; weight 14.4 g
