Treasure case: 2005 T582 Very small, flat, fragment of gold with evidence of hammering, possibly relating to scrapping. Too little survives to be able to make even a tentative identification and its exact age is thus unknown although it is likely to be over 300 years old. I can confirm that this find contains a minimum of 10 per cent gold. Consequently, it qualifies as Treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996 in terms of both age and precious metal content.

Fragment of an undiagnostic gold fragment. As this was a potential treasure item, it was submitted to B.M. Ager (Curator Prehistory & Europe) for inspection and it was described thus: 'The find consists of a short, curved length of gold rod that is cut and broken at both ends and has been faceted by hammering; length, 24 mm; weight, 3.32 grams. Fragment of a plain gold rod. The gold rod is generally rectangular in section and is slightly bent and twisted. One end has a plain, smooth terminal; the other end has been bifacially cut. The surface is pitted; there is no decoration. The rod measures 18.42mm long, 3.48mm wide and 2.06mm thick and weighs 1.61g. Due to its undiagnostic nature it does not represent Treasure under the terms of the Treasure Act (1996).

Description: Length of thick gold wire of circular cross-section, with a fresh granular break at one end and roughly rounded at the other (possibly an old break). It is curved along its length, forming about half of a circle about 35mm in diameter. The outer surface of the curve is smooth but the inner has slight longitudinal facets, as if hammered to shape.  It is slightly crushed and bent at the rounded end, and the damage has caused cracking to the metal here. A cut fragment of a solid gold curvilinear rod. The rod has a roughly circular section and the outer edges are slightly faceted rather than smooth. Either end appears to have been cut rather than broken. 7.69mm in length, 3.61mm in width 1.06g in weight. As this fragment was discovered on a predominately 5th-7th century Anglo-Saxon settlement site it is perhaps most likely to be of this date and may be evidence of metal working. A wrought gold loop on unknown date, but probably Bronze Age. The loop is formed from wrought gold wire (th: 2.57mm) which has been bent into a drop shape. Where the ends cross, the loop has been cut, with evidence for four strikes. One cut put a wedge in the object but did not completely sever it. A second cut severed one end of the loop. The two remaining cuts are both part of the severing of the other end of the loop. The gold is probably a gold-silver alloy. A contorted fragment of rod of triangular section; the faces are concave and the flanges formed at their junctions are therefore acute.
