Penannular gold ring made from twisted wires. There is an area of deformation or breakage to the wires in the centre of the ring. This is characteristic of the ring being opened and closed over a period of time. Although the ring looks to be possibly ancient, nothing about its form, design or manufacture is recognisable from a particular period. The results of metal analysis at the British Museum could also suggest an ancient origin.

Bronze age gold ring, Diameter 14x12.5mm. Diameter of rod 3mm. Weight 4.39 grams. Small gold ring comprising a length of round-sectioned gold rod; the plain, flat terminals meet (but not perfectly). While this object belongs broadly to the class of Bronze Age penannular rings, it has more in common with the Middle Bronze Age type which includes composite rings than with the later Bronze Age series. Simple rings of plain round-sectioned rod have been found in association with Middle Bronze Age composite rings in North East Norfolk (G Varndell in Treasure Annual Report 2004) and in the …

CORONER'S REPORT Description A late Bronze Age penannular gold ring of oval cross-section. The piece originally had alternate stripes of yellow and paler gold although this is now barely visible except internally where the surface is less worn. Measurement of specific gravity indicated that it comprises a gold covering over a base metal core. Composition Non-destructive X-ray fluorescence analysis of the surface of a very worn striped penannular ring indicated for the yellow stripes a gold content of 79-83% , a silver content of 13-17%, the remainder being copper. The gold…

Small penannular gold ring of sub-circular section with decorative narrow banding in yellow and paler gold; corrosion of the silver-rich stripes has caused blackening in places. The external surfaces are patchily worn. The gap is bridged by green corrosion products probably deriving from a base metal core. External diameter 14mm-15mm; internal diameter circa 7mm; breadth 4.5mm; width of gap circa 2mm; weight 4.13 grams. Composition Surface analysis indicated gold and silver contents od approx. 57% and 40% respectively. Identification A well known Late Bronze Age type, d…

Small, plain penannular gold ring of flattened oval cross section; the ends taper slightly to flat terminals. Examination in the laboratory indicated that the object has a base metal core. External diameter 15.5x14mm; internal diameter 4.5mm; breadth 6mm; weight 6.18 grams. Non-destructive X-ray fluorescence analysis of the surface of penannular ring from 'Havant area', Hampshire, indicated a gold content of 76 - 79 %, silver content of 16 - 18 %, the remainder being copper. The ring weighs 6.18 grams and the specific gravity measurement of 9 indicates that it has a base metal core.

Penannular gold ring with hoop of circular cross-section; original decorative banding in broad stripes of yellow and paler gold are very worn and best perceptible near inner surface. Roughness of gold at one terminal could be due to damage. The surface is heavily worn; scores and scrapes are likely to have occurred post-depositionally. Visual inspection suggests that the piece comprises a gold covering over a base metal core. Diameter 18-18.5mm; internal diameter 6.5mm; breadth 6.5mm; weight 9.51 grams. Report to H M Coroner on find of potential Treasure from Radway, Warwickshire. 2005 T552 Small gold penannular ring with traces of decorative banding in close-set narrow stripes, which would originally have shown as bands of yellow and paler gold. The alternate stripes of softer metal are somewhat eroded and the banded effect is now difficult to see with the naked eye. The piece is worn, especially around the circumference. Closer inspection in the laboratory showed that the ring is solid, and has complex three-tone striping; this is analogous to a ring in the British Museum collect…

A small penannular ring of sheet gold construction, with simple terminals separated by a narrow gap. The sheet strip has been carefully folded over, to give an oval shaped cross-section, the internal edges around the interior diameter being separated by a gap of 1-1.5mm. The ring has been dinted, with a compression crimp in one place causing a small tear. This ring finds parallel with both penannular gold rings and 'hair-rings' of the Middle and Late Bronze Age (1400-800BC), which are now generally thought to be either hair or ear adornments. Rings of twisted bar or circula…

A plain penannular gold 'lock-ring' with biconical section and a now hollow interior, which has been crumpled and distorted in the ground. The small ring, originally around 30mm in diameter, comprises two circular sheet face-plates with a thin gold wire fused to the plate join, to form an outer rim-binding. A third tube-shaped sheet (once around 9.5mm in height) defines the wall of the inner circular-shaped opening and is folded over the margins of the face-plates. The terminals defining the slot are triangular shaped in cross-section and are open. Semi-quantitative surface analysi…

A gold penannular ring. Small gold penannular ring with decorative banding in narrow stripes, which would originally have shown as bands of yellow and paler, silver rich gold. The silver rich bands are tarnished to a grey colour. The ring appears to be solid, although this is not certain. Penannular gold ring comprising a gold covering over a base metal core; this is usually a copper alloy. The piece has fairly fine stripes, probably of yellow and paler gold, but this decorative effect is extremely worn and heavily stained red-brown. The central area and gap are plugged with corrosion products which also form an excrescence on one side of the gap. External diameter 20x18mm; internal diameter about 7mm; width of gap about 2mm; breadth 7mm; weight 13.86 grams. Rings of this type date to circa 1150-750 BC.

TREASURE CASE : 2003 T198 Penannular ring with narrow stripes of yellow and paler gold; the latter shows some black tarnish. The outer surface of the ring is very worn in patches, including the top of the hoop. The terminals are flat and display some tearing and 'pushing in', indicating that the piece may consist of a gold covering over a core of some other material (usually base metal). This was confirmed in the laboratory. There is a marked ridge internally, along the length of the hoop. There is some distortion of the striping (which is extremely fine), which could have occurr…

Small penannular ring; the face-plates forming the hoop are made from gold wires. The side plates (terminals) are of sheet gold but it is unclear whether these are pressure welded or soldered on. The piece has been squashed and distorted but the original section would have been triangular. A gold ornament of a well-known Late Bronze Age type, dating to 1000-750BC; these are usually known as 'lock-rings'. A closely similar example in size and construction in the British Museum's Greenwell Collection (WG 20) was found at Cheeseburn Grange, Northumberland.
