Small penannular gold ring of sub-circular section with decorative narrow banding in yellow and paler gold; corrosion of the silver-rich stripes has caused blackening in places. The external surfaces are patchily worn. The gap is bridged by green corrosion products probably deriving from a base metal core. External diameter 14mm-15mm; internal diameter circa 7mm; breadth 4.5mm; width of gap circa 2mm; weight 4.13 grams. Composition Surface analysis indicated gold and silver contents od approx. 57% and 40% respectively. Identification A well known Late Bronze Age type, d…

Small, plain penannular gold ring of flattened oval cross section; the ends taper slightly to flat terminals. Examination in the laboratory indicated that the object has a base metal core. External diameter 15.5x14mm; internal diameter 4.5mm; breadth 6mm; weight 6.18 grams. Non-destructive X-ray fluorescence analysis of the surface of penannular ring from 'Havant area', Hampshire, indicated a gold content of 76 - 79 %, silver content of 16 - 18 %, the remainder being copper. The ring weighs 6.18 grams and the specific gravity measurement of 9 indicates that it has a base metal core.

Penannular gold ring with hoop of circular cross-section; original decorative banding in broad stripes of yellow and paler gold are very worn and best perceptible near inner surface. Roughness of gold at one terminal could be due to damage. The surface is heavily worn; scores and scrapes are likely to have occurred post-depositionally. Visual inspection suggests that the piece comprises a gold covering over a base metal core. Diameter 18-18.5mm; internal diameter 6.5mm; breadth 6.5mm; weight 9.51 grams. A Bronze Age gold penannular ring. The object comprises two round-sectioned penannular rings joined together. The presence of solder could not be detected by analysis but this does not preclude the use of the technique. The flat-faced ends show slight central dimples. Dimensions and metal content: Maximum diameter: 15mm; maximum width: 7mm, width of gap: 1mm; weight: 10.59g. X-ray fluorescence analysis conducted at the British Museum indicated an approximate gold content of 79 per cent.

A small gold penannular ring ('hair ring') of Later Bronze Age date. The ring has a sub-circular cross section and the ends of the terminals are flat. The alternating decorative banding would originally have shown as bands of yellow and a paler, silver rich gold; the silver rich bands are now tarnished to a silvery-grey colour. This ornament may be similar to WAW-F3AE27 on which examination at the British Museum was shown to have complex three-tone striping. This ring belongs to a well dated group of ornaments of the Late Bronze Age, circa 1150-750 BC. Several other examples of banded…

Description: A Late Bronze Age (c.1500 - 800 BC) gold penannular ring of uncertain function made from an octagonally-sectioned rod bent into a sub-circular shape, the ends overlapping slightly. It is thickest and widest (4.9 x 4.7 mm) at its centre and thinnest at either end (1.5x1.6mm and 1.7x1.7mm). The facets to either side of the object are widest. One of these in particular has a number of transverse grooves, apparently non-decorative. Both ends of the object have slight indentations. This type of ring is not to be confused with the penannular gold rings of more circular cross…

A complete, gold-plated Late Bronze Age (1150-800 BC) penannular ring. The ring is in the shape of an oval-sectioned loop. Many of these penannular rings have a copper alloy core wrapped in gold sheet; however, it is not entirely clear if this is the case for this example, as there are to chips or brakes showing the core. There are many examples of these objects recorded in the PAS database. Some of these include: BH-719492 (2018 T761), PAS-011055 (2016 T920), KENT-FF00A6 (2018 T376) and HAMP-425F0D (2018 T89). One of the terminals has a chip of metal missing at the edge. The terminals are not perfectly aligned, giving the impression that the object is ever-so-slightly twisted. There are no signs of the copper alloy corrosion that can accompany the latter scenario. 'T…
