The object is made of four 'sides' soldered together to form a lozenge shape. Modern gold object, probably a jewellery fitting. The object is circular in plan and slightly domed. The upper surface is decorated with six dividing segments, alternating plan and with incised lines radiating from the centre. There is also three small pieces on the upper surface which appear to 'claw' the external edge of the body but do not extend to the reverse. On the reverse, there is a thin tubular attachment in the centre which has a hole running the length of the tube and piercing the front. Treasure Report: 2011 T254 'Tendring District', Essex: gold and gem setting Description: A medieval gem setting. Traces of the original fixing remain on the reverse. The setting is hexagonally shaped and the gem is dark blue, possibly a sapphire. The setting is gold and dates from the thirteenth century. Dimensions: length 11 mm, width 10 mm. Discussion: Consequently, in terms of age and as the object contains a minimum of 10% precious metal it qualifies as Treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996. Enamelled roundel, with a gold backplate and a gold outer wall which is very perfectly and neatly soldered on, but at one point now torn and distorted. Extremely slender internal cell walls of gold pick out a human figure from the waist up, holding out the left arm and with a further curving wall perhaps depicting the right arm. Both cells of the figure, head/body/left arm and right arm, are filled with dark green enamel, and there is white opaque enamel outside.
