Two gold rings with filigree decoration found with the Terling hoard IARCH-B5E1D0 . Roman gold finger ring with a simple D-shaped hoop widening and thickening at the shoulders to the bezel which has an open lozenge shaped hole in the centre to hold a stone or intaglio, now missing. The shoulders and bezel have been formed of a flattened area of gold the long sides of which have been rolled inwards, to meet in the middle on the shoulders and to clasp the missing stone. The shoulders and bezel are thus hollow and the edges of the setting for the stone rough and slightly irregular where the edge has been pushed over the edge of the stone to hold it. The ring has been…

Gold finger-ring, much damaged. The hoop is very narrow at the foot and widens to triangular indented shoulders. One side of the hoop has been torn away and folded back from the box setting, which is broadly ovoid in shape but faceted. Although some whitish adhesive remains in the setting, the original setting is now missing. Date: probably Roman, but the hoop is rather thin in comparison with rings of this period.

A gold finger-ring set with a conical garnet. The hoop is hollow cast, oval in profile, and expands smoothly to the flattened bezel. There is a small tear on the top of one of the shoulders and a slight circular dent. The hoop is extremely narrow, so must have been made either for a child or a very petite woman. Dimensions: External diameter: 14.0 x 11.5 mm; internal: 8.5 x 6.1 mm; weight: 2.58g. Surface analysis conducted at the British Museum indicated a gold content of approximately 96 per cent.

From Fulford et al. 1989, 221: A very slight ring made of sheet gold formed into a fine, tapering tube. Towards the back of the hoop it has been compressed into a squarish cross-section, expanding towards the bezel. This is set with part of a small, very worn, bead of green glass. The join in the tube which forms the hoop is visible on the upper surfaces of the shoulders, and the perforation in the bead can be seen through a break in the thin gold sheet at the side of the setting. The ring is not an obviously datable type, but the re-use of a glass bead for the setting would be more co…

From Fulford et al. 1989, 221, 224: Two triangular fragments of thin gold sheet decorated with beaded wire borders, spiral volutes and small gold globules. The wire is very roughly and unevenly beaded. The bezel collar, which may belong to the same ring, is 16 by 14 mm, weighs 0.5 grammes, and is made of purer gold, 92.2% gold, 5.5% silver and 2.3% copper. Filigree volutes of this type, using beaded or plain wire, seem to be particularly characteristic of Late Roman rings in Britain, and also occur on the Continent. Two fragments from the shoulders of a ring, and a bezel collar. The fr…

The bezel is a broad oval cell containing a dark blue onyx with a blue-grey upper layer, engraved with a satyr and a small cupid.
