A gold finger ring, a hoop of square-sectioned wire which tapers towards a union formed by ends crossed over and twisted around the opposite end, forming a knot (diameter: 25mm, thickness: 2.8mm; weight: 2.31g). The hoop is somewhat distorted, and the thickness of the ring varies. Overall, the ring is slightly worn and in a good condition. A similar example from Colchester is illustrated in Crummy (1983, 47-8, ref no 1756), but this is copper-alloy and has a circular cross-section with large knot. The wire form of the ring is also close to the style of bracelets. A very similar exa…

Roman oval sheet-gold finger ring setting depicting Vulcan. The repousse design shows Vulcan standing holding tongs in his left hand, and a hammer in his raised right hand above an anvil. There appears to be a plain lined border around the design. 1mm of the edge is bent over at 90 degrees, presumably so it could be set into a ring. The metal is very thin, c.0.18mm. Length 12.42mm, width 9.44mm, weight 0.36g. British Museum Curator's report: Gold cameo oval ring setting, with a repoussé design of a standing figure of Vulcan. He holds a pair of tongs in his left hand by his side,…

A Roman gold finger ring of 'keeled' type of Henig Type VIII which generally dates to the 3rd century AD. The plain D-section hoop widens into triangular shoulders, decorated with three flutes. On the lower inside of the band there is a small fold in the metal, but the ring is in good condition and unworn. The ring is mounted with a prominent oval bezel consisting of a dark red carnelian intaglio encased within a box setting. The intaglio portrays in profile, a standing winged figure, probably Victory, facing left. It is rendered in a crude style but some detail can be made out in the…

Treasure case 2004 T19: Disclaimed A gold finger ring with thin rectangular section hoop, somewhat distorted but complete. The hoop is soldered somewhat crudely to a rectangular bezel. The bezel is a box setting and is constructed from a flat rectangular plate with filigree wire around the edge; and an additional gold plate inside with raised edges, bent over to enclose a gem (now missing). The crude manner in which the hoop has been attached may indicate that it was a later addition, which scientific analysis to some extent supported as the gold content of the hoop and box setting …

Gold finger ring, Henig type 3, with white stone cameo. The ring is of hollow construction, complete but slightly squashed with numerous dents, several cracks and one tear in the surface. The setting is oval, 12 by 7mm, with a 1mm flattened area around it. The hoop is D-sectioned, tapering sharply to the back, with traces of facets along the shoulders. The engraved cameo, of white agate against a light blue background, is slightly obscured by dirt; it depicts a female bust in profile to the right, with the hair in a low bun - the hairstyle is comparable with portraits on coins of Marcu…

Plain gold ring of slightly distorted circular shape made from circular-sectioned wire, about 1.5mm in diameter. The ring is quite rudimentarily formed and its scarfed join is still visible. Probably intended as a finger-ring, it is also possible that it was part of a simple ear-ring or necklace. The simple form is undiagnostic, but a Roman date is conceivable.

The bifurcated shoulders feature a simple stylised openwork floral design consisting of a tiny glass gem of uncertain colour in a sub-circular setting, representing the flower head, below which is a pair of leaves on a stem. This stem and leaf decoration is missing from one shoulder. The sides of the shoulders bear a simple indented (feathered) decoration. The hoop is complete and is D-shaped in section. A gold finger ring, now distorted, with a flat-sectioned hoop with an overlapping soldered join. The hoop is decorated externally with unevenly spaced transverse hammered depressions, which are very worn in one area. There is a crack across the hoop, possibly across an old break which, in antiquity, has been mended internally with gold solder. There are no internal marks. Width of hoop 3mm. Thickness 1.5mm. Original external diameter c. 22mm. Similar to an example in Crummy (1983, 48, fig.50, no1770). Probably Roman.

A complete gold object which may have functioned as a finger ring or some sort of mount. The object is now distorted but is formed of a band of gold, one third of which is rectangular and flat in section with a central longitudinal groove with straight vertical tiny grooves across this. Either end of this flat band flares into a wider decorative openwork panel, also rectangular in over-all shape but defined by beaded filigree along its borders with a continuous piece of beaded gold wire running between the borders forming a wavy line. This would have been openwork originally but is no…

A Roman gold finger ring with a gem setting which is oval. The gem is nicolo glass, with a dark blue substrate, chamfered sides and a flat, light-blue upper surface. It is engraved with a standing figure facing left (on the intaglio), leaning on a column. This is probably a representation of Apollo, as on a nicolo glass intaglio from Braconbury, Felixstowe, Suffolk (M. Henig A Corpus of Roman Engraved Gemstones from British Sites (3rd edition, Oxford, 2007), 95 and PL. 1, no. 25). The lower part of the setting is cracked. A Roman gold finger-ring, with openwork hoop and empty box-bezel, severely distorted, damaged and crushed, but evidently originally of good quality workmanship. The hoop, lightly tapered from shoulder to back, comprises a pair of border strips enclosing a symmetrical arrangement of openwork motifs: a central small annular ring at the back is flanked by scrolled tendrils which are followed by a pair of confronted peltas at the shoulder.
