Treasure Number: 2016 T176 Period: Undiagnostic Description: Gold finger-ring. Dimensions: Diameter: 15mm - 24mm Width: 5mn Discussion: The ring was analysed by several specialists at the British Museum and it was found to be too undiagnostic. Chronologically it could not be attributed to the Bronze Age, Iron Age, Roman, Early Medieval, Medieval or Post-Medieval periods. Conclusion: Due to the undiagnostic nature of the find it cannot be securely dated to pre-1716 and as such falls outside the provisions of the Treasure Act 1996.

A complete gold finger ring of uncertain date. Description: The ring is is circular in section and has some slight bending in places. Measurements: Diameter: 21mm; thickness: 1.5mm; weight: 1.68g Discussion: As the ring lacks any diagnostic features, it is not possible to date it conclusivly to older than 300 years in age and therefore would not qualify as potential treasure.

Gold ring, probably a finger-ring of unknown date. It is made from thin gold strip, consistently 4.3-4.5mm wide and 0.6mm thick. It is flat on both faces, but more polished or worn on the exterior. There is no obvious seam but there is a slight tear on the inside in one place which might indicate a point of weakness at a join. When found, it was flattened, but has since been bent out to its present irregular shape. It fits neatly and comfortably on a finger, and is approximately 20mm in external diameter. It weighs 2.3g. The ring does not obviously appear modern but there is no e…

A complete but distorted gold finger ring set with a carnelian in an oval bezel. The hoop is 1.2mm wide and ovoid in section, widening to flat triangular terminals where it is joined to the bezel. This join is strengthened by a strip of gold wrapped round the ends of the hoops. The back of the bezel is an applied flat plate, with a central circular pierced hole. The raised oval setting is formed from another sheet of gold folded and pinched at the top of the oval. Around it at the base is a border of twisted gold wire, with filigree beaded wire above this. A squashed and bent gold finger-ring of uncertain date. This artefact weighs 6.39g and is formed of a single band that forms a continuous hoop without sign of a join or solder line. This band has an oval cross-section, though the inner surface is slightly flatter than the convex curve of the external surface. The band has a width of 3.9mm and thickness of 1.8mm. Probably originally circular, the hoop has been squashed so that the irregular oval form occupies the external measurements of 25.0mm x 19.7mm. The hoop has also been bent from its original plane to occupy c.12.7mm on the …

A gold ring, possibly fitting rather than a finger ring. The ring has a sub-rectangular section and is undecorated. It is now distorted into a sub-rectangular shape in plan. There are no maker's marks or hallmarks, nor is there an obvious seam in the band. Post-medieval finger rings are often decorated but even if they are not they usually have a D-shaped cross section and thicker band. It is also seemingly too plain to be of Roman or early-medieval date, so as this ring is generally undiagnostic and out of context it is not possible to securely date it to pre- AD 1714, therefore i…

Incomplete gold finger ring, Henig Type VIII, with the inscription 'TOT' on the bezel. The bezel is circular and very worn. The letters 'T' are feint whereas the deeper incised letter 'O' is much more visible. The letters 'T' are depicted as simple straight lines with inward pointing lower terminals. The letter 'O' is a simple circle, and unlike most 'TOT' rings, the 'O' is shown as a capital letter and is larger than the flanking 'T's. The shoulders are triangular and are both decorated with two circles; one situated at either side at the widest part of the shoulder. The ring…

CORONER'S REPORT Description of Object A Roman gold finger-ring with oval hoop (slightly distorted in its narrowest arc), which expands to form rounded keeled shoulders flanking a flat, slender, elongated ovoid bezel incised with the Greek word EUTYXI - 'Good fortune to you (the wearer)', or 'May you (the wearer) prosper'. The size and spacing of the letters is a little irregular but they are neatly cut with well-formed seriphs. They retain much of their black-coloured inlay, probably niello. Discussion For the ring type, though with differe…
