CORONER'S REPORT Description of Find A small gold finger-ring with near-circular hoop, which expands to form the simple narrow ovoid bezel. In its lightly-convex surface, which appears much worn, is a small curved indentation, perhaps the last vestige of an engraved motif. Discussion Except for a bevelling of the inner edge of the hoop the form of the ring is similar to a Roman type which often has an engraved image on the bezel - bird, lion, bust etc., but above all, in Britain, a stylised palm branch (cf. 2006 T463 and 2006 T588 of gold; also 2005 T230 and 2006 T418 of silve…

CURATOR'S REPORT Description of Find Gold wire ring, comprising two strands of bevelled wire loosely twisted together. The ends of the wire have been hammered flat to fuse them together and close the loop. Discussion The ring bears resemblance to ear-rings of the Roman period, but would not have functioned as such. It may have been a finger-ring, but the hoop is rather narrow. The ring was found in close association with KENT-7413A7; a sub-triangular piece of silver ingot, with one flattened edge. It is impossible to say if the two items are associated. Additional Meas…

A Roman gold finger ring of 'keeled' type of Henig Type VIII which generally dates to the 3rd century AD. The plain D-section hoop widens into triangular shoulders, decorated with three flutes. On the lower inside of the band there is a small fold in the metal, but the ring is in good condition and unworn. The ring is mounted with a prominent oval bezel consisting of a dark red carnelian intaglio encased within a box setting. The intaglio portrays in profile, a standing winged figure, probably Victory, facing left. It is rendered in a crude style but some detail can be made out in the…

Plain gold ring of slightly distorted circular shape made from circular-sectioned wire, about 1.5mm in diameter. The ring is quite rudimentarily formed and its scarfed join is still visible. Probably intended as a finger-ring, it is also possible that it was part of a simple ear-ring or necklace. The simple form is undiagnostic, but a Roman date is conceivable.

A gold finger ring of late Roman date (fourth century AD). The finger ring has a circular hoop which has been bent out of shape. The hoop has a circular section which widens and swells to the shoulders. The bezel is a rectangular box setting, with tall sides and a rubbed over rim. The reverse of the bezel is flat with the marks of the hoop attachment visible. There are rounded knops either side of the bezel at the point at which the hoop joins it; 4 knops in total. The bezel is missing its setting, which would have been a stone or glass setting, of which no traces of the adhesive rema…

A complete gold Roman finger ring. The ring has a D-shaped cross-section and consists of a narrow band, which gradually widens to form a flat oval bezel with rounded shoulders on either side. A crushed gp;d Roman finger ring, probably dating to the 3rd century AD. Description: The ring has been squashed almost flat, leaving it triangular in plan. The raised bezel cell has also been warped likely leading to the loss of the setting. The shoulders are expanded and the bezel section rectangular in shape. The bezel would have been pear-shaped and probably set with a semi precious stone like a garnet (similarl to KENT-5BEBAB).The ring band is made from hammered gold sheet and the bezel cell applied with solder. An incomplete hollow cast gold finger ring with light blue intaglio of Roman date. The finger ring has been damaged; the bezel has been distorted out of shape and it has lost the majority of its hoop. A small part of the hoop remains bent in towards the reverse of the bezel and indicates that the ring had a narrow band of c.4mm wide. This extends into expanded shoulders and a wide bezel which have a convex outside and flat inside. The inside of the ring is damaged. It appears to be a separate sheet of gold to the exterior which has been moulded to form the interior of the ring, cre…

An incomplete gold finger ring of Roman date (c. AD 200-400). Description: The hoop of the ring is circular in plan and rectangular in cross-section. Its narrowest point is opposite the bezel and from here, the sides of the hoop divide into two segments which separate gradually to form triangular shoulders. Half way along the shoulders, the two halves of the hoop are connected by a circular join, creating an open-work effect.
