An iconongraphic finger-ring in the medieval style. The bezel is formed of three vertical panels, the central one containing the rudimentary, half length depiction of an unidentifiable saint. The two side panels are decorated with an improvised foliate motif and the reverse of the hoop is fashioned to simulate cabling. The finger-ring is gold (?may be brass) but is of no great age and is likely to have been produced as an historicist piece in the late nineteenth or early twentieth centuries.

Gold ornamental ring from Kirkstall Abbey, Leeds This gold ring, found apparently in 1887, is formed of a central cross within a lobed frame. The back of the bezel is flat. In the absence of any comparable pieces in the British Museum collections it has not proved possible to identify the age and origins of this ring. In these circumstances, there is not enough evidence to show that it is more than 300 years old. As this find was discovered pre-1997 we must evaluate it under Treasure Trove laws rather than the Treasure Act 1996. Under Treasure Trove, evidence would have to point to th…

This tiny gold ring with thin hoop and square bezel set with a purple stone is puzzling in that the shape corresponds to 16th-century rings, but it is so thin and lightweight as to suggest that it may in fact be early 19th century. In the absence of further evidence to confirm a pre-1709 dating, the ring falls outside the provisions of the Treasure Act 1996.

A gold finger ring with turquoise / aquamarine stone and decayed niello decoration of early modern date (c. 1750-1850). The hoop of the finger ring is sub-circular (slightly oval) in plan and D shaped in cross section. It is regular in both width and thickness; at the shoulder of the ring both sides flare to form a much thickened bezel with a hollowed centre which holds a small oval blue – turquoise or aquamarine stone. The stone is held by four clasps / grips and the edges of the outer shoulder are decorated with floral scrolls. The hoop of the ring in plan measures 18.6mm lengt…

Modern gold finger ring, with openwork lozenge bezel set with a small stone. The circular band is plain and undecorated. The inside of the band has the hallmark 750 in lozenge / (five pointed star)18 AR in rectangle / CD in oval Both the 750 and 18 relate to the purity, which in this case is 18 carat gold. As the 750 is not accompanied by a crown, it makes the hallmark continental rather than British. No exact match for the hallmark could be found; the star is used by several countries on the continent, including Norway and Spain. The AR and CD could represent the assay office, o…

A gold "Twisted Cord" finger ring with a knot at the bezel. This ring is a band formed of twisted cords, which interlock at the bezel to form a simple knot. There is evidence of where the metal has been soldered at the shoulders. Upon investigation by three curators, it appears to be made of either low quality gold (i.e. 9-carat) or gold-plated metal alloy. The owner could take it to a jeweller for testing, if desired. Gold finger ring / 'posy ring' with incised inscription on interior face dated to the early modern period (post 1708). The finger-ring is formed from a D shaped section hoop of gold, being circular in plan. The edges of the ring have been slightly abraded and have small notches cut into the band caused by the movement in the soil. The inscription is incised into the internal face of the ring and is cut in an italic hand. It reads: God for me apoynted thee. The letters are slightly florid with slight embellished scrolls. After the inscription is a single rectangular stamped cartouche, …

Gold Finger Ring. Plain cast band of flattened D-section, without inscription or hallmark. Slightly nicked and twisted. One gold articulated band made of individual links on pivots forming basketweave pattern, each link with a bead. The ring was reported by the finders as it was believed to be ancient in date, and possibly Merovingian in culture. Dr Barry Ager, curator of the Continental Early Medieval Collection at the British Museum, confirms that there are no known examples of Merovingian rings of such construction. Judy Rudoe, curator of Renaissance & Later Collections, has assessed the band and surmised that it was undiagnostic in nature and may not necessarily be a finger-ring, but a fitting or f…

Date: possibly 19th Century Description: Gold ring (?) in the form of a flat strip expanding slightly towards one side which has a square raised rim on three sides, possibly the remains of a setting for a stone. However, the shape of the hoop is unusual; it does not conform to the standard shapes for the post-medieval rings of the 16th-18th century and may therefore be later. A narrow gold band (4mm thick) with slightly convex sides, inscribed inside in seriffed lowercase letters: 'I wis to finde a constant minde', followed by the maker's mark (crowned DC) and the letters WPM (P above W & M). The edges are sharp suggesting that this ring has hardly been worn. The size of the ring is 20mm (internal diameter). Discussion: The seriffed letter text is found on rings from 16th Century through to 18th Century. The maker's mark on this ring can be paralleled to an example in the British Museum collections 1961,1202.339, dated to 18th Century. The find dates t…

Gold finger ring. Formed from two bands of twisted wire, one slightly wider than the other, and then hammered almost flat on the outside edge and two sides. The internal face retains the rounded shape of the wires and is only slightly worn. Probably post-medieval although no close parallels have been found, may date as recently as 20th Century. External diameter 20mm. Internal diameter 17mm. Width of band 2mm. Weight 1.16g. The finger ring cannot be securely dated to pre-1710 and as such falls outside the provisions of the Treasure Act 1996. Erica Darch

A gold finger ring of the type known as puzzle rings. Three inter-linking gold hoops square in section and 1.5mm wide. The hoops are mis-shapen and twisted, but were approximately 20mm in diameter when in its original shape. Similar has been recorded in the Treasure Annual Report 2005/6, (2005 T518), figure 880, page 171, and reported on by Judy Rudoe. In this report, Rudoe states that: "Although examples are known , puzzle rings are not common before 1700", and there is no contextual or stylistic evidence to date this ring to before 1711. This finger ring has therefore not been r…
