Two gold interlinked bands, possibly earrings, of uncertain date. Curator's report: Two thin gold interlinked bands, rectangular in cross-section, tapering towards hook and eye terminals. Possibly earrings. Discussion: Whilst it is possibly older than 300 years and could therefore qualify as Treasure under the Treasure Act (1996), it is not diagnostic enough to assign to a particular type and period Dimensions: Diameters 7.5 and 9.0mm; Weight: 0.89g. Metal content: The object is made up of 84 - 87 % gold, 10-13 % silver, and 1% copper. Kate Sumnall

Treasure case 2008 T619: Roman earring A distorted gold rod, of diamond-shaped cross-section, evenly tapered towards both ends. Probably the originally S-shaped hoop of a Roman ear-ring. One end terminates in a simple, rather short, hook with blunt tip, probably for attachment to the ear; the fine tip of the other end was deliberately turned back on itself, probably to secure a (now missing) bead of glass or semi-precious stone. Date: 1st - 4th century AD. Dimensions: Length 39.5 mm. Maximum thickness 4.4 x 3.5 mm. Weight: 4 g. In age and precious metal content the…

Description: Cast gold annular ear ring. This is roughly sub rectangular in plan with a lozenge-shaped cross-section. The ring is widest at its mid point and tapers towards a point at either terminal, both points overlap by 5mm, but are not fixed together in anyway. Discussion: There is a parallel for this form of ear-ring in Lindsay Allason-Jones: 'Ear-rings in Roman Britain', no. 35. A similar example has been recorded as treasure 2008 T619 and added on to the PAS database ESS-58B950. Length 23mm, width 23mm, thickness 3.4mm, weight 3.9g. In terms of age and as the object c…

A distorted sub-oval gold wire ring with an integral loop at one end flanked by small coils of fine gold wire, one damaged. Probably an ear-ring. Date: probably Roman, 1st - 4th century AD. Dimensions: length 31.3 mm; width 14.6 mm; thickness of wire 1.5 mm. Weight: 2.58 g. Non-destructive surface metal analysis conducted at the British Museum indicated a gold content of 87-90% and silver content of 9-11%. Roman gold lunular ear-ring. The decorative part comprises a flat crescent-shaped piece of sheet gold, decorated with applied filigree wire. Forming a border around the outer edge runs a section of rilled wire (c. 1.1mm thick), with each crescent terminal decorated with a single gold bead. The inner field is decorated with thinner rilled wire (c. 0.5mm) curled into spirals, comprising two back-to-back crescents, with ends rolled back, and two larger more complex loose spirals filling the rest of the field. Originally, the returns on the ends of the spirals were set with spherical gree…

Date: Probably 2nd - 3rd Century A gold Roman ear ring, complete albeit for a stone setting. The ear ring is form from a simple gold wire loop, which has a circular section. It is bent over itself and terminates with a blunt tip. The loop is soldered into the reverse of the decorative part of the ear ring. This main element is circular with a central cylinder of gold sheet. This cylinder probably once held a stone or gem. Soldered about the edge of the cylinder there is a flat circular collar. The collar has been shaped with a shallow peak and trough type design and in each troug…

Gold earring. Identified by Lindsay Allason-Jones as a 2nd Century Roman ear ring of probable Eastern Mediterranean provenance. Richard Hobbs (Romano-British Curator at teh British Musuem) has prepared the following report: Gold ear-ring, consisting of a large hoop, circular in section which slightly swells from the terminals. The attachment terminals form a hook-and-eye arrangement. The hoop has a number of different decorative elements: a fixed polyhedral bead of green glass, and another probable bead which has now broken away; a loose rope-style cylinder of filigree wire and fo…

Description: A Roman gold ear-ring of rectangular form, seemingly complete, though distortion obscures most of the front face. The edges are lightly scalloped and the simple openwork decoration comprises a design based on small crescentic piercings. It is not possible to determine the form of the centre of the plate. The long tapered hook, also distorted, is fastened to the centre of a cruciform brace which is soldered to the back of the main plate. Discussion: The ear-ring is Allason-Jones Type 11 (Lindsay Allason-Jones Ear-rings in Roman Britain, Oxford 1989, p8). Ralph Jackson reco…

A Roman gold wire ear ring probably 3rd century AD in date. The ear ring is made of round gold wire up to 1mm thick that has been formed into a complete loop. It is decorated with two knots formed from overlapping the wire and twisting the terminals creating a double wire thickness between the terminii. The ear ring has two attachments of twisted wire joined to the ring by twisting the terminals which appears to have held a further attachment (now missing), probably a pearl or a bead of emerald or glass. Discussion: Presumably such earrings were inserted into the ear lobes and then…

Part of a gold, Roman earring dating to the 1st or 2nd centuries AD. The earring consists of a double boss made up of two convex faces from a single sheet of metal. There are two small, granulated pellets which sit on the waist between the two bosses. There is no form of attachment but it is likely that there would have been gold wire soldered on. This earring is an Allason-Jones type 13b which normally has three pellets on the waist. It is fairly unusual in Britain however an earring of this type has been found at Caerleon, Gwent (National Museum of Wales Acc. No. 54.389A:F5). …

The ear ring is made of gold with a square setting, which is set within a decorated border. The setting is formed by a square cell which has a plain frame around the edge. The setting is probably dark green glass which is slightly abraded except for where it is chipped, and the surface is then shiny with conchoidal ripples. The frame around the setting on the outer face appears to be integral to the surrounding border. On the reverse this square cell forms a high-relief platform from which a length of gold wire protrudes from the centre. The platform has a burr around the base of t…

A) Gold ear-ring of disc, bar and pendant type, its hook slightly distorted, the disc dented and damaged at one side, and one of the two pendants lacking. The embossed disc and double-ridged trapezoidal crossbar are fastened to an integral plain back-plate. The disc conceals the lower part of the hook, which is fastened to its back-plate. Similarly, the fastening of the two pendant hooks at the lower part of the back-plate is concealed behind the crossbar. The surviving pendant, undoubtedly orig…

Ralph Jackson, curator of Romano-British collections at the British Museum, writes: A gold earring probably of Roman date. The object is circular in plan and is made of plain gold wire of softened rectangular cross-section. The two ends of the hoop have been overlapped and twisted. Description: Gold earring of Roman date, probably of Allason-Jones's type 11. It appears to consist of two layers of thin circular sheet backplate, both now crumpled but originally 14mm in diameter. In the centre of the front is a smaller circular sheet element which may once have been three-dimensional but is now crushed flat. A circular-section wire hook emerges from the reverse. It tapers as it curves out and around to form an apparently well-preserved hook in the shape of an open loop; the wire has a blunt end which is slightly recurved. Dimensions:&nb…
