Two gold interlinked bands, possibly earrings, of uncertain date. Curator's report: Two thin gold interlinked bands, rectangular in cross-section, tapering towards hook and eye terminals. Possibly earrings. Discussion: Whilst it is possibly older than 300 years and could therefore qualify as Treasure under the Treasure Act (1996), it is not diagnostic enough to assign to a particular type and period Dimensions: Diameters 7.5 and 9.0mm; Weight: 0.89g. Metal content: The object is made up of 84 - 87 % gold, 10-13 % silver, and 1% copper. Kate Sumnall

TREASURE CASE : 2007 T443 Description of Object A small, hollow, sub-rectangular sheet-gold object with two undecorated planar faces. A ribbed moulding - four ribs defined by three channels - runs around one long and two short sides and a slender tubular perforation, formed by the addition of a strip of gold sheet, occupies the fourth side. The object, which resembles a bulla type pendant, is identifiable as a component of Roman jewellery, probably a bead-like pendant from a composite ear-ring or necklace.

Treasure case 2008 T619: Roman earring A distorted gold rod, of diamond-shaped cross-section, evenly tapered towards both ends. Probably the originally S-shaped hoop of a Roman ear-ring. One end terminates in a simple, rather short, hook with blunt tip, probably for attachment to the ear; the fine tip of the other end was deliberately turned back on itself, probably to secure a (now missing) bead of glass or semi-precious stone. Date: 1st - 4th century AD. Dimensions: Length 39.5 mm. Maximum thickness 4.4 x 3.5 mm. Weight: 4 g. In age and precious metal content the…

Description: Cast gold annular ear ring. This is roughly sub rectangular in plan with a lozenge-shaped cross-section. The ring is widest at its mid point and tapers towards a point at either terminal, both points overlap by 5mm, but are not fixed together in anyway. Discussion: There is a parallel for this form of ear-ring in Lindsay Allason-Jones: 'Ear-rings in Roman Britain', no. 35. A similar example has been recorded as treasure 2008 T619 and added on to the PAS database ESS-58B950. Length 23mm, width 23mm, thickness 3.4mm, weight 3.9g. In terms of age and as the object c…

Probably a gold Roman ear ring of Allason-Jones type 2e. The ear ring is a loop of gold wire (2.15mm thick). There is a butted joint which may be soldered, or the ring may have originally been penannular. The loop is decorated with incised transverse lines which run right round the wire. The entire loop is covered with these lines. A plainer penannular example of Allason-Jones type 1 is 2010 T287. In terms of age and as the object contains a minimum of 10% precious metal it qualifies as Treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996.

Roman gold lunular ear-ring. The decorative part comprises a flat crescent-shaped piece of sheet gold, decorated with applied filigree wire. Forming a border around the outer edge runs a section of rilled wire (c. 1.1mm thick), with each crescent terminal decorated with a single gold bead. The inner field is decorated with thinner rilled wire (c. 0.5mm) curled into spirals, comprising two back-to-back crescents, with ends rolled back, and two larger more complex loose spirals filling the rest of the field. Originally, the returns on the ends of the spirals were set with spherical gree…
