CURATOR'S REPORT Circumstances of discovery A plain gold band was found in the Osbournby area, Lincolnshire in December 2006. Catalogue 1. Plain gold penannular band. The hoop is formed by a single band of gold which is square in cross-section at one terminal and octagonal at the other. The hoop is now slightly distorted and there are some hammer marks along one surface at the square-sectioned end. 2007 T450 The British Museum Curator's report describes the object as: "Small decorative stud, probably part of a drop-style earring imitating Roman examples. A circular convex rosette has a central protruding knop and is surrounded by a flat circular strip. A border surrounds this and has been marked with indents to give the appearance of beaded wire. The piece is surmounted by three small flattened knops, each with a similar border as the main section. This is typical of 19th-century archaeological jewellery and is therefore not Treasure. N. A complete gold sleeping ear ring, of Modern dating (AD 1900 to AD 2013). The ear ring is circular in shape, with a circular cross section. The ear ring has been hinged, to enable fitting into the ear. No hallmarks are present. It has an external diameter of 13.08 mm, and internal one of 10.49 mm and is 1.09 mm thick. It weighs 0.4 g. Description: Openwork cube, the edges formed from lengths of beaded wire with each face divided into four triangular apertures by two pieces of beaded wire connecting opposing corners. A complete and slightly squashed post-medieval gold ear ring of 19th century date or later. The ear ring is composed by a 15.54mm diameter hollow ring and a second D-shaped smaller element which is wrapped around it. This second element is circular in cross section and shows a straight plate on the back part that is not visible when the ear ring is worn. To the top of the plate is attached the hook which has been bent on itself. To the end of the hook is a small rounded knop. TREASURE CASE : 2007 T443 Description of Object A small, hollow, sub-rectangular sheet-gold object with two undecorated planar faces. A ribbed moulding - four ribs defined by three channels - runs around one long and two short sides and a slender tubular perforation, formed by the addition of a strip of gold sheet, occupies the fourth side. The object, which resembles a bulla type pendant, is identifiable as a component of Roman jewellery, probably a bead-like pendant from a composite ear-ring or necklace.

Probably a gold Roman ear ring of Allason-Jones type 2e. The ear ring is a loop of gold wire (2.15mm thick). There is a butted joint which may be soldered, or the ring may have originally been penannular. The loop is decorated with incised transverse lines which run right round the wire. The entire loop is covered with these lines. A plainer penannular example of Allason-Jones type 1 is 2010 T287. In terms of age and as the object contains a minimum of 10% precious metal it qualifies as Treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996.

A distorted sub-oval gold wire ring with an integral loop at one end flanked by small coils of fine gold wire, one damaged. Probably an ear-ring. Date: probably Roman, 1st - 4th century AD. Dimensions: length 31.3 mm; width 14.6 mm; thickness of wire 1.5 mm. Weight: 2.58 g. Non-destructive surface metal analysis conducted at the British Museum indicated a gold content of 87-90% and silver content of 9-11%. In age and precious metal content the object qualifies as Treasure under the terms of the 1996 Treasure Act.

A Roman gold earring. The earring is made of round gold wire up to 1.25mm thick that has been formed into a complete loop. It is decorated with three evenly spaced groups of grooved lines. It weighs 1.27g and has a length of 21mm. Although the object is a complete loop, it is clear from grave finds that it functioned as an earring. For example a grave discovered in Lexden Road, Colchester, contained a pair of these rings located to either side of the skull close to the ears.
