A modern gold pendant. The object consists of two gold discs with pressed images, replicating probably (the details have not pressed through clearly) coin obverses (i.e. the bust side only repeated to make two halves) of the emperor Maximian (AD 286-310), with a gold disc between and a beaded rim. Such mouldings in thin gold or silver foil taken from a coin 'host' are often termed clichés and were a technique known in antiquity to produce forgeries as well as a similar technique for 'bracteate' jewellery popular in Barbaricum (beyond the Roman frontier). Although both coins and br…

A gold bracteate and other related E-M finds includung a fragment of a great square-headed brooch. Treasure case no. 2009 T264 Addenda to Treasure case no. 2003 T208. The seven finds in the group appear to derive from two, or perhaps three, ploughed-out graves of a 6th-century Anglo-Saxon cemetery. The grave-goods recovered consist of a gold bracteate, fragments from three silver-gilt brooches, four fragments from the bowl of a silver 'sieve' spoon, and two partially surviving, gilded copper-alloy brooches. The latter probably derive from the same grave, or graves, as some of the p…

A complete Early-Medieval (Anglo-Saxon) gold bracteate (c. AD 500 - c. AD 550). The bracteate consists of a gold sheet disc with a rim of beaded wire soldered to the edge at the front and a repoussé zoomorphic decoration. A separate suspension loop is formed by a ribbed strip and is soldered to the disc. The decoration consists of an interlaced animal that is typical for type D-bracteates. Its head is underneath the loop. The design was stamped with a die and the relief was then reworked with a pointed tool both from the reverse and the obverse. The border zone is plain. The bracte…

The pendant is made of a disc of gold sheet that is scratched and heavily bent in several places. Underneath the now missing loop a triangle is formed by beaded gold wire that is framed by spirals made of thinner beaded wires. Inside the triangle are undecorated gold strips that may have framed a now lost decorative stone. The loop has been cut off. The centre is decorated with the design of an anthropomorphic head with bust in contour lines. In the tradition of the imperial bust on late Roman coins and medallions that served as model the head is shown in profile, the hairstyle is dec…

Round gold pendant (bracteate) with an attachment loop at the top of early Anglo-Saxon date. It is decorated with embossed Style I animal ornament. As it depicts an interlaced animal, this is a type D bracteate. A small, stylised bird is visible towards the left edge of the design. The attachment loop is decorated with three ridges at either end and the bracteate is edged with beaded wire. The proper left-hand side of the bracteate is bent backwards in two places. The attachment loop is slightly bent out of shape as well.

A 6th century gold bracteate, found whilst searching with a metal-detector as part of an archaeological investigation. The bracteate is made of gold. The central design is carried out in well-executed pressblech technique, and is of an animal in Style I, a basic ribbon-shaped animal with the eye close to the loop, but with limbs nearly unidentifiable, around a central 'dimple' (seen on some other bracteates). The central design is enclosed within three concentric rings of punched decoration. The outer ring is on the edge of the disc and gives the impression of a bead rim. These i…

Gold disc pendant, the suspension loop torn away, and with distortion to the right-hand edge. The pendant is framed with twisted beaded wire, and the front is decorated with triple-stranded beaded wire in a symmetrical pattern composed of two highly stylized interlacing animals. The surface of the filigree is very heavily worn. The back is undecorated, except for traces of scrolled decoration in single beaded wire at the top of the pendant, which must originally have framed the edges of the lost suspension loop. The pendant is an unusual type of bracteate, a mainly Scandinavian cl…

Bracteate consisting of a gold sheet disc with a worn rim of milled wire soldered to the edge and repousse zoomorphic decoration. A suspension loop of ribbed strip is folded round the rim and passes through a rough slot at the top of the disc. The decoration consists of four radiating loops with median grooves and a figure-of-3 motif on the right. The two lower loops end in feet with single claws and the loop at the top is in the form of a reversed C, apparently representing the head, neck and legs of a disintegrated animal design. This is an example of a D-type bracteate, and the dev…

Treasure case 2013 T628 - Anglo-Saxon gold bracteate and gold armlet Discovery: Both objects were found in the ploughsoil whilst metal-detecting a field in which previously 4 gold bracteates and a copper alloy bracelet in three fragments had been discovered. The new bracteate was found within an area of 10 square metres in which two A-bracteates and a B-bracteate (2009T657 and 2011T657) had been found. The location of the first B-bracteate (2004T297) from the same field has not been recorded with similar precision (Behr 2010). The gold armlet has been found ca 30 metres south of th…

A gold bracteate dating to the 6th or 7th century AD. A gold uniface pendant, imitating a Byzantine or sub-Byzantine gold solidus, probably inspired by a solidus of Anastasius (491-518). The pseudo-inscription reads DNΛTTΛN_N_T┤T┌ΛNΛNCC (all Ns reversed). This is not a literate inscription but can most plausibly be derived from a literate inscription of Anastasius (DN ANASTASIVS PP AVG), although it may simply be copying some of the more common letter forms. However, derivation from Anastasius would also be consistent with the fact that his coins are among the more common…

Gold bracteate pendant, buckled and distorted but complete. The pendant takes the form of a thin gold disc, with no framing wire surrounding the disc and no evidence for one ever being present. The central motif has been stamped with a matrix (the obverse is more sharply defined than the reverse). It is not symmetrical and not easy to decipher, partly due to creases being difficult to distinguish from deliberate decorative motifs. The following description is only an attempt to distinguish the different features: Left of the loop (at 10 o'clock) a circular animal head is shown with…

Description: An incomplete gold C-bracteate, dating to the early-medieval period (c.AD450-600). The pendant comprises a disc of gold sheet that is bent, torn and crumpled in appearance, and of which approximately 30% is missing. The obverse features an anthropomorphic head looking left with a quadruped beaneath. Of the anthropomorphic head can be distinguished a ‘stripy’ hairstyle with a line ending behind the head in 3 curving lines forming the ribbons of the diadem (based on the imperial heads of 4th century Roman coins and medallions that served originally as model…

Early-medieval A-bracteate. A disc of beaten gold bearing a low-relief design within a stamped border, and retaining a finely billeted rim, now detached at 3 o'clock and broken at 12 o'clock relative to the design. The object also bears a ragged transverse tear extending from 10 o'clock. The central design is obviously derived from the profile diademed imperial bust appearing on late Roman coinage, though with significant adaptations which are deliberately chosen, rather than simple misconstructions of the design. A first departure from the Roman model is th…

An Early Medieval D-bracteate, dating AD 475-525. The pendant is nearly completely preserved with only some parts of the beaded gold wire originally attached, now partly detached, to the edge of the gold foil missing. The wire show signs of wear. The disc is heavily bent in two places, partly obscuring the design. The motif is stamped in high relief, there is a clear impression on the reverse. The loop was made with six ridges of equal size but has been strongly abraded at the top so that here only four ridges are preserved. It was soldered on both sides of the disc, on the front …

Early Medieval gold A-bracteate, 34mm long, 28mm wide and 1mm thick with a weight of 3.59 grams. The bracteate is incompletely preserved, the loop has been ripped off and about one third of the stamped outer zone on the upper right part is missing. The gold foil is heavily buckled with several tears. The lower right part has been folded which may have been intentional whilst the other damages appear to be post-depositional. The gold foil was surrounded with a beaded wire set along the edge. It is heavily abraded. Underneath the (missing) loop is a beaded gold wire attachment (but with…

Gold C-bracteate. The bracteate is made of a disc of gold sheet with a thick, beaded wire soldered round the rim, though coming away from it in places and with the ends now come slightly apart; diameter, 30 mm (approx). The top and bottom edges have been bent over in opposite directions, possibly by agricultural activity rather than deliberately, and the suspension loop of ribbed sheet survives, crushed flat and abraded, on the back. The disc is decorated with a repoussé design of a stylised horse with open jaws, pricked ear and round eye. Its foreleg is extended and the should…

A gold bracteate of C type dating to the fifth or sixth centuries AD. It consists of a flat circular disc of gold sheet, 36mm in diameter, which has been folded almost in half, then one half's edge has been folded back on itself twice (forming a zig-zag in cross-section). The suspension loop has been torn off, taking a small part of the edge with it. The main decoration is in repoussé, showing a man's head facing right above a stylised horse, all surrounded by a ring of low flat-topped circular pellets and beyond this a double (or in places triple) groove.
