A Roman inscribed gold amulet (lamella) comprising a rectangular sheet of gold foil, originally tightly rolled but unrolled by the finder. The resulting creases and corrugations were regularised by a metals conservator at the British Museum to enable an attempt at reading the inscribed text. The top, bottom and right side of the sheet are largely intact, but the left side is broken away. Text (Dr Roger Tomlin): Inscribed across the short axis by a fine point are 18 lines of cursive writing, of which only the right-hand portion survives. Line 1 ends with a space, as if it is some …

A Roman gold amulet or talisman, comprising a rectangular plaque (lamella) of thin gold sheet, lightly incised with a text in a mixture of Greek and Latin characters and magical symbols. There appear to be nine lines of text across the short axis of the plaque and two additional marginal lines on the right side of the long axis. Creasing of the soft metal of the plaque (there are seven 'fold' lines) shows that it was originally rolled into a tube, with the text on the inner face. It was unrolled by the finder. Such amulets, inscribed with secret formulae, were worn as a protectio…

A folded, crushed and crumpled fragment of very thin gold sheet or foil. It is difficult to identify definite original edges, but it appears to be a comparatively narrow incomplete strip. On the largest surviving visible, relatively un-crumpled, roughly rectangular part of the sheet there appear to be three or four lines of lettering, c. 1mm in height, and possibly in Latin.

Treasure: 2008 T782. Gold centre-looped pendant amulet resembling similar examples of cosmetic pestles, in copper alloy, from kits or cosmetic sets, often associated with a small mortar, for the preparation of powdered cosmetics. "I have recorded many hundreds of the copper-alloy components since my original Britannia 1985 paper and all the evidence still supports the cosmetic link, but no evidence at all for woad. I would briefly say that I believe the form of the kits imbued them with roles additional to their basic function in preparing powdered cosmetics, especially related to sta…
