An undatable (but probably Late Post-Medieval or Modern) gold ring, possibly a finger-ring or strap fitting, measuring 19.12mm in diameter (internal 16.72mm) and weighing 1.6g. The ring is rectangular in cross-section with signs of wear at opposing points, one one side only. I think the object is undiagnostic - the section is odd and this may not be a ring (Judy Rudoe pers.comm.)

Date: 17th century Description: Gold posy ring. D-shaped hoop which is slightly misshapen. Inscribed to the inside 'the love Is true that I O U x'. Preceding the inscription are the remains of a word, which appears to have been rubbed off. All that can be discerned are flourishes of the initial capital, possible 'T', and an end letter, possibly 'e'. Following the inscription are remnants of a punch, which is likely to be a maker's mark, although this is unidentifiable.

A thin ring with plain exterior is inscribed inside in lower case 'A true freinds [sic] gift', with maker's mark TS. The identical mark appears on a posy ring from the Joan Evans gift in the British Museum (1961,1202.362) and has been identified as that of Thomas Sarson of London, who entered this mark in 1737 and is recorded as still active in 1745. The ring does not therefore fall within the Treasure remit. Judy Rudoe

Gold finger ring with 19 diamonds of various cuts set around the hoop. One stone is missing from the back. The style of the ring is reminiscent of a belt and the bezel is in the form of a buckle, creating asymmetry on the hoop. The interior has been enamelled with black to continue this effect of a belt and buckle. Black enamelling is also visible on the top and bottom of the hoop.
