Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: the Vale of Glamorgan

Llantwit Major, Vale of Glamorgan: Gold strip (06.25) A gold fragment is of octagonal section. Each face has an irregular oval panel (16.2mm x 4.3mm, 13.5mm x 4.4mm), which has been formed by hammering the strip. Further hammering on each end of the panels, has resulted in the thinning of the strip and has also caused the strip to widen at these points. The strip may have been deliberately thinned at the ends to facilitate cutting. The thicker of the two ends (2.7mm) displays a number of chop or cut marks on each face, indicating that the strip was deliberately cut at this position.…

Treasure case: 2005 T582 Very small, flat, fragment of gold with evidence of hammering, possibly relating to scrapping. Too little survives to be able to make even a tentative identification and its exact age is thus unknown although it is likely to be over 300 years old. I can confirm that this find contains a minimum of 10 per cent gold. Consequently, it qualifies as Treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996 in terms of both age and precious metal content.

Treasure case 2006 T223 Gold Band Dimensions: 20mm x 15mm x 1mm x 0.7mm Date: Indeterminate date Description: Plain gold band now oval in shape although the band is damaged and distorted. The band is 1mm in width and 0.7mm thick, having a flat underneath and inner perimeter, with a curved face, giving the band a wedge-shaped cross-section. There are no signs of there being a suspension loop or any other broken method of attachment, suggesting that the band is a ferrule or fitting from an object such as a pendant or a knife. The band is of indeterminate date but in the balance of proba…

County: North Yorkshire

Treasure case: 2006 T413 gold circular fitting This broad flat band has no bevelling or shaping at the edges which one would normally expect in a finger ring, suggesting that it is more likely to be a fitting of some kind. In the absence of any other diagnostic features such as decoration or inscription, there is no evidence to date this object pre-1706 and as such falls outside the provisions of the Treasure Act 1996.

Fragmentary Gold Fitting (?) This thin gold strip has suffered much damage making identification extremely difficult. The raised decoration, visible on the reverse, suggests that it is most likely a fitting of some kind rather than a finger ring. In its present state it is impossible to date it with any accuracy but it is not thought to fall within the Treasure remit.

Circumstances of discovery: While gardening. The finder was digging a tree stump and bushes in a garden with a maximum depth of approximately eighteen inches. Description: A gold pendant of unknown date and manufacture. The pendant is rectangular, slightly distorted and has an integral loop. A figure of a knight wearing armour, spearing a dragon. The scene is topped by a gathering of clouds and a series of rays indicating a sunburst. The reverse of the pendant is hollow, showing a recessed cavity which must once have had a now lost plate covering the space. This is confirmed by …

A complete but distorted gold finger ring set with a carnelian in an oval bezel. The hoop is 1.2mm wide and ovoid in section, widening to flat triangular terminals where it is joined to the bezel. This join is strengthened by a strip of gold wrapped round the ends of the hoops. The back of the bezel is an applied flat plate, with a central circular pierced hole. The raised oval setting is formed from another sheet of gold folded and pinched at the top of the oval. Around it at the base is a border of twisted gold wire, with filigree beaded wire above this. A miniature socketed bronze axe attached to a ring of gold wire. Miniature models of socketed axes in bronze are a well known type of object. They appear to be particularly common in Wiltshire and surrounding counties. Although a small number are known to have been made in the Late Bronze Age and Iron Age, the majority date to the Roman period. They are usually interpreted as votive models or amulets. Analysis of the gold from which the ring was made suggests it is a Roman object. Dimensions and metal content: Axe: length: 19mm; width across blade: 9mm. Ring: 11mm x 8mm, made from w…

A Roman gold finger-ring with solid stepped rectangular bezel. The hoop, distorted and incomplete, comprises an oval-sectioned, ribbed rod, smooth on the outer face. At the shoulders it is fused to the base of the bezel and enclosed by three pellets. The bezel has a short two-line inscription incised on its lightly-cambered surface. Wear, also apparent on the hoop and shoulders, has partially erased the inscription, which appears to read _ IV / _ II, perhaps [V]IV(AS) (ie. 'Long life to you .....') followed by an abbreviated personal name. The ring form is paralleled by an exampl…

A slightly tapering tube with coiled wire decoration attached to it near the wider end and about two-thirds of the way down. The wider end is closed by a flat plate, secured from coming out by the ends of the tube being bent over. The plate now sits at an angle, with one side pushed slightly down the tube, but it would appear that it originally sat square to the end of the tube. Attached to the plate is a small loop, of fairly flat cross-section. The tube is bent slightly to one side towards its narrower end, the edges of which are folded in. It seems likely that it is broken at this …
