Treasure Case 2012 T338: Gold Droplet from Brailes, Warwickshire. Casting waste, comprising a complete amorphous droplet of gold or gold alloy. The droplet measures 14.77mm long, 8.37mm wide and 6.71mm thick, weighing 5.1g. Iron Age coins have been recovered from the same farm (Treasure Case 2012 T726), and it has been suggested that gold such as this may have been connected with Iron Age gold working, such as coin production or recycling. However, a similar piece (2004 T408) was determined to be undiagnostic and undatable following metal analysis.

Maureen Mellor and John Cherry have examined it. In their opinion the precious metal content of the find does not fulfil the requirements of the Treasure Act, and it therefore falls outside the provisions of the Treasure Act 1996.

REPORT FOR HM CORONER Treasure case 2006 T521: Kingsbury, Warks. Five small irregular gold lumps of indeterminate age or function. Total weight 33.77g Non-destructive surface metal analysis conducted at the British Museum indicated that the gold content is approximately 99%. In view of the undiagnostic nature of the lumps it is my opinion that they cannot be demonstrated to be Treasure under the terms of the 1996 Treasure Act. A small fragment of gold sheet was discovered. The fragment clearly is part of a larger object, but unfortunately close examination has proved unable to establish from what object the fragment came. It is impossible to establish the date of the object from which the fragment came. Analysis of the metal content of the fragment was also unable to provide further help in dating the piece. The fragment was found to contain 91% gold. Dr JD Hill Department of Prehistory and Early Europe The British Museum London

A fragment of gold foil that is folded and potentially once from a larger item of uncertain dating. The undiagnostic fragment is formed from a flat piece of gold foil. It was potentially folded as plough damage rather than intentionally due to the way it is folded on an angle. There do not appear to be any visible marking on the object. The surfaces are smooth and of a yellow/gold colour. The metal has a slight ripple effect along one short edge. Due to the undiagnostic nature of the find it cannot be securely dated to older than 300 years old and as such falls outside the…

A gold finger ring, a hoop of square-sectioned wire which tapers towards a union formed by ends crossed over and twisted around the opposite end, forming a knot (diameter: 25mm, thickness: 2.8mm; weight: 2.31g). The hoop is somewhat distorted, and the thickness of the ring varies. Overall, the ring is slightly worn and in a good condition. A similar example from Colchester is illustrated in Crummy (1983, 47-8, ref no 1756), but this is copper-alloy and has a circular cross-section with large knot. The wire form of the ring is also close to the style of bracelets. A very similar exa…

A small Roman hexagonal gold finger-ring set with a red jasper intaglio. The hoop, now slightly squashed, has broad angular shoulders. The oval intaglio is set flush with the surface of the rectangular bezel. The intaglio is finely-engraved with a combination: a bearded Silenus head conjoined back-to-back to an inverted, clean-shaven, youthful head, probably Pan. The sinuous motif that separates/ unites the heads is probably an elephant's trunk with stylised palm branch, but it may also be 'read' as facial hair and a long hair lock for the Silenus. Spalling of the surface of the intag…

The ear ring is made of gold with a square setting, which is set within a decorated border. The setting is formed by a square cell which has a plain frame around the edge. The setting is probably dark green glass which is slightly abraded except for where it is chipped, and the surface is then shiny with conchoidal ripples. The frame around the setting on the outer face appears to be integral to the surrounding border. On the reverse this square cell forms a high-relief platform from which a length of gold wire protrudes from the centre. The platform has a burr around the base of t…

A Post Medieval gold posy-ring. The posy-ring is a D-shaped band. The band is, from appearance and weight, made substantially from gold. The exterior is undecorated, but the interior surface has an English inscription reading NO FREND TO FAITH. The single line inscription in upper case suggests a late 16th to first half 17th century date. The diameter of the ring is 17.95mm on the exterior, and 16.2mm on the interior. The height of the ring is 2.55mm. It weighs 1.51g. As the ring dates to the late 16th or first half of the 17th century and the gold content is more than 10%, the ring f…
