A wide gold finger ring which has a cast 'cut-out' design with inscribed detail. The design is framed by a strip border above and below decorated with vertical and oblique lines. The main part of the pattern consists of two erotic scenes or two depictions of the same event. A naked shaggy headed, bearded human-like male with a horse like tail crouches over the hind quarters of a donkey-like animal. The 'donkey' looks back at the 'man' who has his erect member pointing at the 'donkey's' rear it in one scene. In the other scene the man has entered the animal. This ring has been examin…

A complete but misshapen gold finger ring or circular fitting with a plain and simple hoop. There is no decoration either internally nor externally. The inside of the band is rough compared to the outside suggesting this may be a fitting for something like a cane or knife rather than a finger ring. The internal diameter of the ring is 21.8mm (max), width 5.2mm, thickness 0.9mm, weight 3.2 grams. The ring is probably of late medieval to modern date however its undiagnostic nature makes it impossible to securely date it to pre-1709. As such it falls outside the provisions of the Treasur…

A small droplet of gold, with some scratching and pitting on either surface. The droplet is roughly sub-rectangular with a D-shaped cross section. Although the item appears to be of gold, without contextual association it cannot be securely dated to a particular era and therefore does not qualify as Treasure under the stipulations of the 1996 Act.

A fragment of a possible gold ingot weighing 3.56g. The ingot, which is a dull yellow-brown, has an L-shaped section and the surviving original edge of the object is stepped in three ledges. The broken edges are very ragged. Multiple parallel lines on the hollow side may suggest a more recent date.

TREASURE CASE 2017 T1074. A small gold ingot of uncertain date. The ingot is broadly square in plan with a sub-triangular cross section. The ridge along the top of the ingot is uneven and to either side of the ridge the sides vary in their slopes (un-uniform), with one slope being longer than the other. There is a slight ridge on the underside of the ingot. The ends of the ingot appear to have been cut or clipped, probably from a larger ingot. There are multiple scars and scratches over all surfaces of the ingot, probably mostly a result of post-depositional damage. Measurements: 12.7…

A complete but distorted gold finger ring set with a carnelian in an oval bezel. The hoop is 1.2mm wide and ovoid in section, widening to flat triangular terminals where it is joined to the bezel. This join is strengthened by a strip of gold wrapped round the ends of the hoops. The back of the bezel is an applied flat plate, with a central circular pierced hole. The raised oval setting is formed from another sheet of gold folded and pinched at the top of the oval. Around it at the base is a border of twisted gold wire, with filigree beaded wire above this. Description: A small gold ingot of uncertain date, but probably later Iron Age to Early Medieval (Viking). The ingot is roughly sub-rectangular in section and in plan. There appears to be damage or a lip in the ingot on one long edge. The short edges appear to show cut-marks. Dimensions: Length: 24.6 mm, Width: 13.5 mm, Thickness: 2.1 mm. Weight: 7.82 g Discussion: Although gold ingots are traditionally difficult to date out of context they are often attributed to a Viking date, c. AD 750-1050. The Vikings had a bullion economy where the purity and weight of the metal were more impor…

Description The object is a mostly plain bar shape being rectangular in plan and in cross section while in profile it is very slightly concave. One terminal is flat and square however the opposite narrow edge appears to have been cut its edge being bevelled into a point that looks triangular in side profile. The bar is gold in colour. Dimensions: The bar is 21.6mm long, 6.2mm wide, 3.2mm thick and weighs 5.85 grams. Discussion:  Barring the cut mark on the ingot there are no diagnostic indicators for the date of manufacture. This is well evidenced by a number of similar ingots …
