A gold finger-ring with a stone setting and filigree decoration. The finger-ring has been made by cutting out its shape from a sheet of gold. It consists of a lozenge-shaped bezel and a narrow band that tapers out from the two side-points of the bezel. The band has been broken or cut open and flattened out, but bent at both terminals. In the centre of the bezel is an oval-shaped gold collet, not integral but a separate component that has been soldered into place. The collet consists of a strip of gold that has been cut so that five triangular points project inwards to clasp a trans…

Description: Undated gold finger ring. Sheet band with median repoussé rib. There are at least two transverse creases which may indicate a join but the ring is slightly distorted, making this uncertain. Dimensions: External diameter 20mm. Width of band 7.5mm. Weight 2.29g. Discussion: Images of the ring have been seen by British Museum curators including Gillian Varndell, Neil Wilkin, Richard Hobbs and Barry Ager, and they have concluded that it cannot securely be dated to any particular period. It must therefore remain undated, and so does not fall under the provisions of …

Gold disc made from two circular sheets, one marginally overlapping the other.   The disc is pierced and the piercing is lined with a collar of gold sheet, presumably to strengthen it against wear.   The pendant appears unfinished and there are no signs of wear, particularly in the piercing where the rubbing of a narrow suspension ring would quickly show.

A damaged and distorted Roman gold filigree finger-ring. The hoop is slender, of softened rectangular cross-section. The shoulders and bezel comprise an openwork design based on an eye-shaped frame of beaded wire enclosing two concentric filigree wire circles (the outer plain, the inner beaded), with a symmetrical arrangement of four circular pellets (one missing) at the centre. One of the shoulders preserves two (of, probably, three) similar pellets, but all are missing from the other shoulder. The outer face of the bezel displays traces of heavy or prolonged wear. For the similar…

A circa 2nd to 3rd century AD gold pendant, ovoid, set with a blue-grey glass paste intaglio, very worn, pitted and devitrified. The setting has a central rib and all that remains of the attachment is a single gold filigree loop. The intaglio depicts a robed seated figure facing right, holding a sceptre in his right hand and an uncertain object in the left. The figure may represent Jupiter but is too worn to be certain. A parallel for the intaglio can be found in Henig 2007, no. 10. References Henig, M., 2007. A Corpus of Roman Engraved Gemstones from British Sites: With a New P…

Roman gold finger ring set with an intaglio. The hoop is rather worn and distorted, but is made up of a flat and wide band of metal, broadly circular in profile, which expands to triangular shoulders. The flattened bezel has an ovoid box setting soldered to it, which contains a dark grey stone intaglio (probably nicolo). The design is rather degraded, but shows a figure of probably a cupid (there may be a semblance of a wing) leaning forwards with his trailing leg straight and his front leg bent. He turns his head back towards a cock standing behind him. In the cupid's outstretched ha…
