Treasure number 2010 T293. A Roman gold finger-ring, complete and in fine condition. The hexagonal hoop has a flat inner surface, a neatly-faceted external surface and prominent keeled shoulders. The lightly-raised oval box setting contains a banded quartz (nicolo) intaglio - flat, oval, with bevelled edge - finely-engraved with the figure of a swimming dolphin with a three-pronged trident protruding from its jaws (or from behind its head). The image of a dolphin had several possible connotations in antiquity. The marine nature of this example is underlined by the addition of a tr…

2019 T201 Roman gold finger ring dating from the 1st to 3rd century AD. Thin strip of sheet gold that has been bent into the shape of a finger-ring, which may have been its intended purpose. The sides of the object are bent inwards, probably the result of post-depositional processes. The surface of the object is decorated with two sets of incised parallel lines that form a chevron pattern; in places, these are intersected by incised lines that run in opposition to them, thus creating cross-hatching. One part of very heavily worn, such that the pattern is entirely absent. Th…

Treasure Number: 2014 T217 A Post-Medieval gold signet finger-ring fragment. Most of the hoop is now missing although the bezel remains intact. The finger-ring shows a coat of arms which Dr Clive Cheeseman (Richmond Herald, College of Arms) has described as "being made up of a shield and a crest, with helmet and full mantling engraved in what appears to be a 17th century style. The shield has an engrailed saltire on it with a rose or cinquefoil in the upper part of the shield. It can often, as here, be difficult to tell the difference between a rose and a cinquefoil. If it is a ros…

A complete plain gold finger ring of unknown date but probably from the post medieval - modern period. The ring is very thin, undecorated band. It has an oval cross-section, forming a 'traditional court' shape band. There is a slight chip or scratch in the object. There is no hallmark or any other diagnostic feature to the ring. The object is similar in style to WMID-E6F361, WMID-E6E061 and ESS-F1E6C3. Natalie Zimmer (pers.comms) has confirmed that because the object has no features that would enable a secure date, there is not enough evidence to date this ring to pre-1719. T he…
