Treasure case: 2005 T582 Very small, flat, fragment of gold with evidence of hammering, possibly relating to scrapping. Too little survives to be able to make even a tentative identification and its exact age is thus unknown although it is likely to be over 300 years old. I can confirm that this find contains a minimum of 10 per cent gold. Consequently, it qualifies as Treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996 in terms of both age and precious metal content.

An incomplete gold dog brooch of uncertain date, possibly early Post-Medieval. This three dimensional brooch seems to have been hollow or at least the body was hollow. The dog is positioned left with the head turned forwards. One ear is missing however the ear nearest the tail survives in good condition. All four legs are missing and there is a break across the chest area that is now filled with mud. The curled tail survives. The nose, mouth and eyes are very detailed and the dog wears a loose fitting collar that swivels around it's neck. On the reverse a hinged pin, now bent, and cat…

A gold decorative fragment. This fragment seems to probably be complete but it is uncertain what artefact type it would have originally have been attached to. This decorative fragment is of a slightly scrolled foliate design. The symmetrical item has a raised central rib that terminates in a spherical knop. To either side of this rib are two tear-drop shaped lobed fields demarcated by a raised border. Another raised line lays parallel to the upper borders of the top lobes, curving in towards the upper half of the central rib before scrolling outward and expanding to form a single sphe…

A squashed and bent gold finger-ring of uncertain date. This artefact weighs 6.39g and is formed of a single band that forms a continuous hoop without sign of a join or solder line. This band has an oval cross-section, though the inner surface is slightly flatter than the convex curve of the external surface. The band has a width of 3.9mm and thickness of 1.8mm. Probably originally circular, the hoop has been squashed so that the irregular oval form occupies the external measurements of 25.0mm x 19.7mm. The hoop has also been bent from its original plane to occupy c.12.7mm on the …

CURATOR'S REPORT Description of Object Gold filigree necklace component dating to 2nd to 3rd century. The wire has been looped to form an openwork design with a central lozenge and four corner ovals, with a loop at each end. A small fragment of the next link is preserved in one of these. The wire has been notched so as to appear beaded; much of the surface has been worn smooth. Discussion There are exact parallels in Biroli Stefanelli 1992, nos. 240-1. Cat. no. 240 is from Syria.

Roman gold finger-ring. The hoop consists of a flattened ribbed strip which expands to openwork triangular shoulders decorated with inturned peltas flanking a central serrated rib topped by a pellet. The shoulders support an oval box setting with remains of a pinkish coloured substance, probably adhesive for a gem which is now missing. The ring is rather squashed. Discussion: although no exact parallel can be cited, a similar ring with openwork shoulders was found at the Roman fort of Vechten in the Netherlands (Henkel 1913, no. 251). Post medieval brooch; cast gold brooch of possible 16th century date. The brooch is a miniature ring of twisted gold wire sandwiched between two further rings of plain gold wire. There is further twisted wire forming a cross through the centre of the brooch, adorned with a gold pellet at the end of each arm and with a tiny ring of twisted wire in the centre. The back of the brooch has a fitting formed of a flat strip of gold which extends across the centre of the ring and is then curled up on itself at both ends to form loops. The finder confirms that there was originally a gold pin at…

Gold foliate accessory. It is made of fine pieces of gold, is broken in places and is therefore very delicate. Within a small circular recess to the front and bottom of this piece is green enamel. The presence of four loops at the corners suggests that it may have been sewn onto fabrics, though it was more than likely part of a necklace or bracelet. It is in the style of 19th-century revivalist jewellery and therefore is not classed as Treasure.

Gold finger ring with square bezel, within which is set a stone. There is a slight reddish tint to the surface but non-destructive X-ray analysis has confirmed that this ring has a gold content of 89-92%, which is the equivalent of 22 carat gold. The stone, which is badly cracked, has been identified by Raman spectroscopy as quartz and could be referred to as a faintly banded agate. The d-section hoop expands at the shoulders, forming an openwork pattern of three prongs, all with geometric decoration. The ring weighs 8.84 grams. Stylistic features date this ring to 19th-20th centuries…

Gold now distorted finger ring. The outer face of the band has eight evenly spaced circular bosses with a circular continuous twisted rope-like motif around each one. The edges of the band are shaped, and there are opposing pairs of small rectangular knops between each circular boss. The inner face of the ring is inscribed with mainly lower case letters, which reads; 'No fancy Strang Shall make me chang.' Some of the letters contain traces of the original black enamel, but it is now missing in most of them.
