Gold quarter stater, some wear, and abrasion on the obverse, Hobbs 1638. This type is not recorded in Van Arsdell; there are five in the BM including that illustrated in Hobbs all from Essendon, Herts and another six on the Celtic Coin Index (CCI 930963, 941350, 980498 from Watford, Tring and Bishops Stortford; 962670, 971014, 980125 unlocated). The type is related to Whaddon Chase and Tasciovanus types, distribution so far is Hertforshire (but Bishops Stortford eg noted as possibly from Essex, so this example is the most easterly so far but within the Catuvellauni/Trinovantes area.

Philip De Jersey has stated: These coins were produced by the Ambiani in Belgic Gaul, imported into Britain in large numbers across almost all of the coin-using areas. Widely assumed to date to the Gallic War period.

Circumstance of Discovery
A group of three coins was recovered and clearly represents addenda to a previous hoard discovered from the same findspot, in several batches between 2002 and 2005 (for latest see: 2006 T 26). In terms of composition, this group of coins is entirely consistent with the earlier groups.
Two coins belong to the uninscribed North Eastern or 'Corieltavian' series and were likely to have been produced during the second half of the first century BC. The third coin is inscribed. It belongs to the same series and is likely …
