A gold penannular ring of late Bronze Age date. The ring is 17.5mm in diameter and has a circular cross section of 6mm diameter, with a gap of 2mm between the flat ends. The ring appears to be solid gold rather than plated as there are no evident cracks or fracturing in the surface which would be expected from corrosion of a copper alloy core. No decorative banding is evident.

A complete Middle Bronze Age gold tripartite penannular ring dating to circa 1300-1150 BC. It is C-shaped in plan comprised of three circular-sectioned penannular rings soldered together. Each terminates in a straight and even break. Discussion: The form is consistent with other examples processed through the Treasure Act including 2021 T762 (Gard 2021) and 2012 T165 (Smith 2012) each of which is dated to the Middle Bronze Age. In those records, it is noted that gold tripartite penannular rings often lack secure archaeological contexts (Meeks, Craddock and Needham 2008: 13) while the …

A Late Bronze Age (1150-800 BC) gold or gold-plated copper alloy penannular ring, oval in cross-section with cut or burred-over edges at the terminals. The edge opposite the terminal has a cross-section measuring 7.5 x 7.9mm. A paler gold strip or wire (possibly silvery-gold with some evidence of tarnishing, mostly on the inside of the ring) winds around the brighter gold surface of the object to give striped bands of equal size, c. 1mm wide. The object measures 18.5mm in length, 19.8mm in width, 7.9mm in max.thickness (the side opposite to the terminal) and weighs 13.14g.

Description: An incomplete gold penannular ring dating to the late Bronze Age (c.1000-800BC). The ring has been manufactured from a sub-circular copper alloy bar over, which a thin sheet of gold has been applied and hammered flat, thus giving the appearance of being made of solid gold. It has been decorated with silver, or silver rich gold wire, which covers the ring in a continuous spiral giving a striped effect. The stripes are extremely thin and measure about 0.8mm in maximum width, whilst the gold sheet is approximately 0.25mm thick (measured at the damaged terminal). The gap b…

A Late Bronze Age gold-plated copper alloy penannular ring dating from 1300-800BC. The ring is oval in shape and the terminals are flat ended. The ring is cracked and chipped in several places where the inner copper alloy core has corroded underneath, and the terminals have become joined by corroded metal. Dimensions: Diameter: 15.3mm, thickness: 4.1mm, weight: 3.48g Discussion: A gold-plated lock ring of a similar style on the database (LANCUM-C2543F) that is Bronze Age in date was submitted for consideration as treasure (Treasure case tracking number: 2017T810) and includes t…

Late Bronze Age (c1150 to c800 BC) gold penannular ring (or 'lock ring') formed from gold sheets; the weight of the object suggests that these are probably wrapped around a copper-alloy core. The ring is bi-conical in form, with flat triangular terminals. There is a prominent ridge running around the outer edge. Both faces are decorated by transverse, parallel striations. There is some damage to the inner edge of one of the faces, where the two sheets have come apart slightly. Diameter: 28.69mm, thickness: 8.86mm, weight: 7.25g There are a number of similar examples recorded …

Description: A Middle Bronze Age gold composite penannular ring, possibly incomplete, probably dating to c. 1300-1150 BC. The object consists of two concavo-convex bands of gold sheet which appear to have been soldered together and curved around to form a loop, the latter left open. Dimensions: diameter 13.9mm; width 7.9mm; thickness 2.3mm; weight 3.26g. Discussion: Comparison to other artefacts of the same type would suggest that the present artefact formed the outer cover for a base metal or organic core, along with an inner gold sheet, cf.
