Description & identification The reported object is a decorative gold posy ring. The ring consists of a thin gold band, D-shaped in section, with a tightly set repeating pattern of tooled S-shaped indentations on the external surface, possibly for enamel, although none appears to have survived. The internal surface in engraved with an inscription which reads ‘Though absent yet constant’ in italic letters in sentence case. A gold medieval gem set finger ring of 'stirrup' type, with the hoop expanding to a thickened bezel, 2.6mm wide and 1.2 thick with a recessed oval setting for a cabochon gem of around 3mm length, which is now lost. Cast gold plate terminal, mount or fitting probably originating from from a larger object. The object is broadly trapezoidal in plan with rounded edges, consisting a decorated front plate that overhangs a rectangular box-like fitting attached to the back of the object. To this in turn is soldered the remains of a thin gold strip, possibly reflecting some sort of hoop or broken suspension loop.
