Gold quarter stater, some wear, and abrasion on the obverse, Hobbs 1638. This type is not recorded in Van Arsdell; there are five in the BM including that illustrated in Hobbs all from Essendon, Herts and another six on the Celtic Coin Index (CCI 930963, 941350, 980498 from Watford, Tring and Bishops Stortford; 962670, 971014, 980125 unlocated). The type is related to Whaddon Chase and Tasciovanus types, distribution so far is Hertforshire (but Bishops Stortford eg noted as possibly from Essex, so this example is the most easterly so far but within the Catuvellauni/Trinovantes area.

A celtic gold stater of the Trinovantes, Tasciovanus' first coinage, dating from 25-20BC. (Note that Van Arsdell considers the coinage of the Catuvellauni to be indistinguishable from that of the Trinovantes). It is struck on an oval flan that is 13mm long, 11mm wide and 1.8mm thick. It weighs 1.35gm. Reference: van Arsdell, Celtic Coinage of Britain, number 1688-1.
