A small gem-set gold pendant comprising a translucent purple oval glass gem, of plano-convex cross-section, set in an oval gold frame 2.3mm wide, encircled by a beaded gold wire. The beading is very neat and regular. There is no backplate to the pendant, allowing the gem to be seen from both faces. The suspension loop, made from a tapered gold strip, is quite rudimentarily attached to the frame and is atypically orientated (running front to back rather than side to side), may have been an ancient repair. The lack of a backplate rules out an early-medieval date and the pendant is proba…

Early Saxon gold and glass oval pendant. Very thin gold sheet back-plate, now with slight damage. The setting is formed from plain gold sheet with a single beaded wire collar where it joins the back-plate. A separate ribbed gold sheet suspension loop has a loop of beaded wire around the base, the ends of which are tucked inside the loop, hiding the join to the back-plate. The glass is Roman mosaic glass with pink and white forming curved vertical lines, overlaid with green curved transverse lines and yellow and black lines forming a lattice overall. A similar mid 7th century example w…

A gold pendant. Treasure reference number 2011 T592. The object is highly decorative and in a good state of preservation. The object is cuboid, hollow and displays damage at one end and also on the base. The cuboid is constructed primarily by three sheets of gold; a rectangular base plate, a long strip of gold angled to form the sides, and a open rectangular top containing a green gem setting. The setting is flat, rectangular and now pushed slightly downwards into the hollow body as a result of damage sustained post-deposition. The sheet gold side panels are stippled and decorated w…

19th century gold spherical bead pendant This pendant is formed of a hollow spherical bead with a triple thread of twisted wire round the centre and lozenges of granulation applied in two rows above and below the twisted wire. The pendant loop is formed of a tube for a chain to pass through, the openings edged with applied wire. The regular placing of the grain work decoration and the form of the pendant loop suggests a date in the 19th century. There is no evidence to date this object pre 1705.

An openwork circular gold pendant. It is made from four concentric rings of beaded wire, 0.5mm thick, joined to form a 3mm wide band. A suspension loop of sheet gold has one end attached between the outer two rings, folded over to form a 3mm high loop and is joined to the other face at the same point but less securely. The loop has three longitudinal ribs. The outer edge of the pendant is worn on both sides of the loop and around one side of the pendant. The main body is slightly bent. A possible medieval gold hinged book pendant. The two sides of the pendant are rectangular in shape, formed of folded gold sheet which have been stamped with an irregular grid pattern. The two sides of the pendant are attached to a central bar by three coils of gold wire forming a hinge which still functions. At the top of the bar is a multifaceted knop with a hole though the center. Through this hole a gold wire loop is threaded. This loop closes over a suspension loop soldered to the top of the side which would be the front if the pendant were to be opened as a book. When the loop i…

TREASURE CASE : 2004 T291 Description: An Anglo-Saxon gold cross-shaped pendant cut from a sheet of gold. One of the arms is perforated quite near the edge, most probably to allow its use as a pendant. It is of Greek form, with expanding arms of equal length, and the armpits are rounded. It is totally plain and undecorated on both sides, and slightly convex on the 'good side' (the back shows some displaced metal near the cut hole). There are some signs of wear. Dimensions: Length and width 18mm, weight 1.7g. Discussion: The cross is difficult to date exactly due to its …

Openwork gold pendant, circular and with a cross in the centre. The cross is made from a straight horizontal piece of beaded wire with a shorter vertical piece soldered onto the top and bottom. The beads are slightly flattened to front and back; both faces of the pendant are almost identical. The cross is enclosed within three concentric rings, the inner and outer of beaded wire and the central ring of plain wire. The outer ring is extremely worn and the beading can only be seen on the sides of the pendant. A corrugated loop has been added, decorated with three ridges separated by two…

A gold solidus of the emperor Theodosius I struck at Milan between 378 and 387 (Roman Imperial Coinage vol. IX, no. 5f or 8b). The coin has been fitted with a ribbed suspension loop, also of gold, at the 12 o'clock position on the obverse (6 o'clock on the reverse) in order for it to serve as a pendant. This process is well known from the early Saxon period when many Roman gold coins were thus treated. Coin dated to 378-87, suspension loop added from the fifth to early seventh century. Obv. A gold pendant of the Early Medieval period, late 7th to early 9th century date. The pendant is oval-shaped in plan, and sub-triangular in section. The backing is cut from a separate sheet of gold, and the setting is stepped, pressed from a sheet of gold. There is a twisted cable effect circumscribing two of the steppings, which may or may not be separate elements added to the pendant. In the centre is a circular apperture that would have taken a stone. The top of the pendant has a twisted strip of gold remaining, though incomplete, that would have formed the suspension loop. Treasure Case 2009 T395: Early Medieval artefact - possibly a pendant Object Date: late 6th to 7th century Description: pendant (possibly) Torn gold disc, missing large portions. Decorated with fine filigree in geometric arrangements centred around a round setting containing a small, cracked, amber setting. Discussion: The original function of the object is unclear, but it is likely to be a pendant. Thin and crumpled gold disc missing part of its rim and decorated by three irregular cells formed by gold strips soldered upright onto it. Two of the oblong cells still contain inlays. These are (now) dark and it is difficult to distinguish their material, but they seem to be glass. Further dark material is present on the outside of one of the cells. The disc originally seems to have had an upright rim, now squashed, and there is a tear in the front. The back is plain.
