An incomplete gold hollow cross pendant, perhaps used as a miniature reliquary, of late medieval date (15th century AD). The pendant is in the 'budded' cross or 'cross bottony' style, with each arm terminating in three semi-circular knops. The front of the pendant is decorated with five multi-petalled engraved flowers, one at the end of each arm and one in the centre. Multiple lines of tiny punched dots radiate out from each flower. The flowers separate the words of a black-letter inscription; across the arms is written 'crux florat' (meaning 'may the cross…

A medieval reliquary pendant of lozenge shape with a suspension loop. The reliquary pendant is gold and dates from the first half of the sixteenth century. The front panel of the reliquary is engraved with an image of a female saint, either the Virgin Mary or St Helena, supporting the cross. The cross is speckled in a manner suggesting that it is splattered with blood. To the left and right of the figure are foliate tendrils. The saint stands on a chequerboard design, probably indicating a tiled floor or pavement. The back panel slides out to reveal a cavity, undoubtedly designe…

An incomplete, gold and rock crystal, pendant, possibly a reliquary. The object comprises a cut piece of rock crystal in a gold setting with opposing suspension loops. When viewed in plan, it takes the the form of a flask or similar vessel. The top is a hemispherical knop in the form of a bottle stopper; there is a wide flanged collar below which it tapers in to form the neck of the vessel. This then widens out to form the main bulk of the vessel, with aneloganted octagon cut in the centre. There is a small foot at the bottom. The crystal is broken at the neck of the vessel and t…

Gold reliquary. A lozenge-shaped box of composite construction with rich ornate decoration rendered by an applied combination of fine twisted gold strips and spherical gold granules of two sizes [of diameters 1.5mm and 1mm] attached to a plain but roughly textured plate. The sides of the box are of plain smooth gold sheet and it is closed by a plain sheet metal back plate bordered by a further cabled wire. The back borders appear to have been run along the corners of the rhomboid as single strands from the front, though now absent entirely from one of the four corners. There are three…

A set of three interlinked gold 'puzzle rings'. Each of the three rings passes through the other two. Two of the rings are of equal form and size, each having been made from a single strand of wire, the ends butted together, a kink deliberately created at one point in the circumference. In contrast, the other ring has been formed from a twisted strand and has been bent into an uneven figure of '8' shape. Maximum width of ring: 23.2mm. Total weight: 7.38g. A similar set of puzzle rings is Treasure case 2005 T518, from Ilam, Staffordshire, which could not be securely dated and …

This is an incomplete object made of gold sheet, probably dating to the Roman period. It has been tentatively identified by Roman specialist Martin Henig as a votive plaque representing the female sex organs. The remains of the plaque consists of two segments, which have fractured off from each other, but which fit together; the upper portion includes a curved suspension hook and the upper portion of the plaque, which is sub-triangular in shape. The upper portion is torn/fractured across its lower horizontal edge; the second portion of the plaque continues the main area of the plaque …

The object consists of one end of a rectangular strip of filigree-decorated gold sheet. It has a border formed by a false herringbone plait of two plain, twisted wires in-between two finely milled wires. The border encloses two lengthwise rows of back-to-back S-scrolls (only two scrolls on each side now surviving) separated by a single median wire, all finely milled. Fixed to a short gold shank soldered to the back of the sheet is a small, lozenge-shaped foil. The fragment is probably part of a plaque inserted into the front of a rectangular belt- or buckle-plate with a raised rim, suc…

Small gold appliqué decorated with curvilinear filigree wire. The plaque comprises a thin piece of sheet gold forming an extended rectangle in two decorative 'halves', with each of the shortest sides cut to form a 'V' shape. There is a small circular perforation at each corner, as well as an additional perforation below one of the corner perforations; other holes appear to be wear and tear. The appliqué is decorated with fine applied filigree wire, which forms a continuous border around the whole outer edge (although it is broken and missing in a few places). The inner part of the d…

Square shaped flat gold tablet with punched Greek lettering dating to the Roman period c. AD 100-410. Description: There are ridges on the surface showing that the tablet was folded at some point. The longest ridge, running vertically down the centre, suggests that the tablet was folded once at the centre, and then twice over horizontally, as suggested by the three transverse ridges intersecting it on the left side. The side to the right of the vertical ridge is relatively flat.  There appear to be three fields of punch inscribed writ…

A Post Medieval gold pin head (16th century). Curator's report: Small, heavy gold pin head with hole for attachment to a gold wire. The hemispherical head squashed flat, decorated with applied filigree circlets and knops, and with flower heads made up of small turquoises (identified by Raman spectroscopy) held in claw settings and surrounded by petals of openwork gold decoration made of fine twisted wire. This fascinating pin head suggests the gold prototypes for the silver-gilt types of the 16th Century which are commonly reported through the Treasure Act. Its e…

Gold pin of unknown date; the pin is slightly bent. The shank is circular in cross-section at the tip, the shank of the pin has a more flattened cross-section. The diameter of the shank gradually declines, towards the point. The head of the pin is roughly square, formed by a flattening of the shank, with a concave impression on one face. This object has been examined, at the British Museum, by the Prehistoric, Roman, Iron Age, Medieval and Post-Medieval curators. It is the consensus that this object cannot be securely dated to a specific period. Due to the undiagnostic nature of th…

Gold fitting decorated with filigree and enamel, in the shape of a stylus eraser, possibly from a styliform pin. It is basically a hollow cone, now flattened to become triangular, and open at both ends; at the narrower end there is an oval aperture measuring 5 x 2 mm, surrounded by a plain square-section wire. At the wider end it is squashed flatter, especially in the middle, but both ends are slightly rounded. This end does not have a corresponding wire around it. Each face, front and reverse, is decorated with a double border of two twisted wires around a trapezoidal panel. The pane…

Gold globular ('ball-headed') pin-head, which has been squashed flat. The shaft of the pin is missing, and there is some damage at its shearing point. The head is decorated with filigree: a median band of larger pellets would have divided the field in two; each half was then decorated with four spirals of fine filigree, coiled round a central pellet (not all of them surviving). The design at the top of the head was further embellished by four lobes (containing two pellets each) converging in a cruciform pattern. This is now visible on one side of the flattened pin-head. Probably of 8t…

A probably hollow spherical headed pin dating from the Post Medieval period (probably 16th or 17th century) and made of gold. The head is 5.64mm in diameter. The pin head is decorated to imitate filigree and applied knop decoration has probably actually been incised or moulded. The design is a mixture of leaves, flowers, dots and rings. The pin shank is wire, circular in section and tapers to the point. It is curved along its length and there are regular notches in the wire. The pin is similar to filigree and imitation filigree ball headed pins of the 16th century such as SWYOR-538…
