Penannular gold ring having narrow stripes of yellow and paler gold, this decorative effect very worn especially around each face. The paler (more silver-rich) stripes have blackish tarnish. Visible green corrosion products, and its light weight, suggest that the ring is one of those comprising a gold covering over a copper alloy core (tested: see scientific report). External diameter 29-27mm; breadth 7.5mm; internal diameter 5.6mm; weight 11.6 grams. Composition The analysis says that the gold bands on the ring are 75-77% gold, 19-21% silver and 4-6% copper, with the paler bands t…

A gold strap fitting from a scabbard or sword-belt, set with cloisonnĂ© garnet and opaque pale blue glass over pointillĂ© gold foil. The strap mount is in the form of a truncated pyramid with squared-off edges. The top and the lower edge of one side of the fitting are damaged and the cell work is slightly distorted. The surface is also partially covered with earth making it sometimes difficult to assess if cells are empty or not. However it is clear that some of the garnet and blue glass inlays are missing while others have slipped sideways into the cells. Each face is filled with an …

A 9th century Anglo-Saxon gold ring weighing 1.8g. The loop, which is badly bent, is a thin round-sectioned band, flattened and widening towards the bezel. On the shoulder there is a decoration of minute dots, emphasizing the triangular shape obtained, subdivided into three small triangular fields. The bezel of the ring is round, slightly bent at the lower edge, 1 cm in diameter. The bezel has a double frame: around a plain frame there is a scalloped border, which originally would have been set off by niello.

An Anglo-Saxon gold and garnet setting, originally circular but now heavily damaged, with most cells empty; plus a separate garnet and foil. A now distorted quatrefoil int he centre preserves remains of a white inlay (scientific examination (see below) suggested that this is probably shell). The quatrefoil is encircled by four half-round, now empty cloisons. From these, stepped cells radiate outwards to the edge of the setting. Four of them still preserve their garnets. Due to the distortion of the object, the garnets have risen and partly tilted and on three of them it is thus possib…
