Date: 9th century. Description: Polyhedral socketed gold terminal ornamented with a pattern of deeply cut roundels seperated by lozenge-shaped fields, containing respectively triangles and squares inlaid with niello. Each roundel additionally contains three plain pellets. The short socket extends from a narrow collar below the head and ends in another. It is pierced by a rivet. The precise function of this object is not clear. Its small size, narrow socket and a lack of smooth flattened base (and thus its unsuitability for sliding across a page) set it apart from the four so called…

Report on Medieval Gold finger Ring from Brailes, Warwickshire, 2006 T395 The object is a Medieval gold finger ring. The ring has a slender hoop which has been distorted in plan. This distortion was probably due to plough damage, as it was found within the plough soil. The loop has a ‘D’ shaped section which slightly expands towards the bezel. The bezel is oval in plan and is set with a carbochon setting. Jon Radley (Keeper of Geology, Warwickshire Museum) commented the setting may be polished quartz, but this could not be confirmed unless a destructive analysis was carried out.…

Maureen Mellor and John Cherry have examined it. In their opinion the precious metal content of the find does not fulfil the requirements of the Treasure Act, and it therefore falls outside the provisions of the Treasure Act 1996.

A small Roman hexagonal gold finger-ring set with a red jasper intaglio. The hoop, now slightly squashed, has broad angular shoulders. The oval intaglio is set flush with the surface of the rectangular bezel. The intaglio is finely-engraved with a combination: a bearded Silenus head conjoined back-to-back to an inverted, clean-shaven, youthful head, probably Pan. The sinuous motif that separates/ unites the heads is probably an elephant's trunk with stylised palm branch, but it may also be 'read' as facial hair and a long hair lock for the Silenus. Spalling of the surface of the intag…

REPORT FOR HM CORONER Treasure case 2006 T521: Kingsbury, Warks. Five small irregular gold lumps of indeterminate age or function. Total weight 33.77g Non-destructive surface metal analysis conducted at the British Museum indicated that the gold content is approximately 99%. In view of the undiagnostic nature of the lumps it is my opinion that they cannot be demonstrated to be Treasure under the terms of the 1996 Treasure Act. The artefact is broken or torn into two pieces, one more substantial than the other (see below) .The two pieces appear to have formed a long, slender, rectangular sheet of gold with tapering ends. The colour of the gold is mid yellow. Both terminals gradually taper to a blunt point and have three small circular perforations which have been punched through from the outer face. On the reverse, the edges of the perforations have a slight burr which are splayed away from the perforation, but not flattened. An incomplete bead, which originally was probably a biconical shape. The bead is made from rolled sheet metal which has transverse ribs on the exterior with a wider, undecorated central strip. The interior of the bead is undecorated. A portion of the bead is missing, running the length of the bead. The broken edges look to have occurred recently.

A complete finger ring which has a D-sectioned hoop. The edges of the finger ring are quite sharp and fresh, suggesting the ring had not been worn or at least worn only for a short time. The interior has an inscription reading 'fortunate if favoured' in lower case - the 'v' in the second word is written as a 'u'. There is not a maker's mark. Dimensions: 18.08mm diameter on the exterior, 16.13mm on the interior, 2.99mm thick and weighs 1.58g. Discussion: The absence of a maker's mark makes precise dating difficult. The ear ring is made of gold with a square setting, which is set within a decorated border. The setting is formed by a square cell which has a plain frame around the edge. The setting is probably dark green glass which is slightly abraded except for where it is chipped, and the surface is then shiny with conchoidal ripples. The frame around the setting on the outer face appears to be integral to the surrounding border. On the reverse this square cell forms a high-relief platform from which a length of gold wire protrudes from the centre. The platform has a burr around the base of t…
