Early Saxon gold composite spangles or pendant: a square sheet plate is set lozenge-wise and pierced for suspension at one corner, the top of the perforation is almost worn through. Wire rings with wound ends hang from the other three corners, each holding a smaller square sheet plate pierced for suspension in one corner. There is a repoussé boss in the centre of all four plates. A horseshoe-shaped stamp consisting of ten trapezoidal impressions has been struck four times on the larger plate, while the smaller ones are decorated with punched dots. Description:  An Early Medieval gold spangle dating to circa AD 450-500. The extant element is trapezoidal and flat. It has no decoration on either face. A small punched perforation is situated at the narrower end of the piece which would have acted as a suspension loop. Length: 14.5mm; Width: 7.4mm; Thickness: 0.2mm; Weight: 0.20g. Discussion:  The piece would have been suspended as part of a larger set forming a spangle, similar to a more complete piece: 2009 T440. Spangles were more typically made from copper alloy and would have been suspended from necklaces, pin heads…

An incomplete gold biconical bead of probable early medieval date. The bead comprises a single length of plain wire coiled into about 10 turns to form the body of the bead. The wire has a raised central rib creating a distinct stepped profile to the bead on the outside and is flattened on the inside. The lower end, which would have formed the centre of the bead, terminates in a rough break. The wire at the complete upper end is neatly tapered and smoothed down. An incomplete biconical gold spacer bead from an early medieval necklace, made from beaded a single coiled length of beaded wire, the ends tapering to a small hole for threading. Several coils of the bead are broken at one end. Biconical gold wire beads of this form objects were used as spacer beads on high status necklaces during the second half of the seventh century. A particularly fine example of such necklaces is from Desborough, Northamptonshire (British Museum), upon which the beads are strung between cabochon garnet pendants and gold bullae (Webster and Backhouse 1991, pp. 28-…

An incomplete gold Spacer Bead of Early Medieval date (AD 600-700). Ascribed culture, Anglo-Saxon. Description: The object is composed of a sheet of gold, conical in its original form, but now compressed, giving a flattened, sub-rectangular shape. The object is decorated with applied filigree wire. The upper and lower edges have beaded wire collars, the lower edge would have attached to a second, similar, cone to form a complete bi-conical spacer bead. This is missing and there is a short fracture along the right upper and lower edges, due to the compression of the object. …

A Bronze age strip of sheet gold which long, cigar shaped with squared off terminals. At either end is a set of three small perforations set in a triangle. These are roughly circular piercings with evidence for rotational action in their formation; the tiny lips of metal pushed through to the reverse have been crudely doubled back and flattened. There is no evidence for decoration. The strip has many transverse creases consistent with it having been rolled up and crushed flat (see above circumstances). The main additional damage is a repeating pattern of rounded hammer dents of varied…

Treasure case 2005 T303 Two joining fragments of corrugated gold sheet, seemingly originally of tubular form, now crushed. The form, style and overall appearance of the fragments do not correspond to any known ancient type, and scientific analysis of the body metal and soldered seam confirm the curatorial view that the sheet is part of an object of recent date, probably manufactured within the last hundred years or so. A fragment of gold sheet apparently decorated with repousse ornament. The fragment is an irregular, three-sided shape and has probably been cut down. One edge is curved, one straight and one now jagged with a notch missing. The surface appears to be decorated with a repousse design which can no longer be deciphered with certainty, except for some curved lines and dots. This object is too fragmentary to identify and date with full confidence. Objects made from and decorated with repousse gold sheet are known from the early Anglo-Saxon period, which could offer a potential broad dating.…
