A complete struck/ hammered North-Eastern Gold Inscribed Iron Age stater 'VOLISIOS DUMNOCOVEROS' and minted between AD 20 - 35 (diameter: 20mm; thickness: 1.8mm; weight: 5.3g). The coin is in a slightly worn but good condition. A parallel-sided thin gold band, with plain back and one broken end, roughly rolled to a near-circle. The decorated face comprises four 'milled' ribs flanked by a plain raised rim. The rim runs round the complete end, which has a tiny circular perforation at the two angles. Neither the function of nor any close parallel for the object has been identified. The cast-in decoration implies a recent date which is neither confirmed nor rejected by the metal composition. Date: Uncertain. Probably 19th or 20th century. CURATOR'S REPORT Description of Object Fragment of Roman gold necklace, consisting of three sections of loop-in-loop filigree wire. One section of wire is plain, whilst the central section is threaded with a blue-glass polyhedral faceted bead. The final wire, probably the clasp, has an applied four-spoke wheel in plain and beaded wire, with a central bead. Discussion The wheel element of this fragment is closely paralleled with a wheel-clasp in the Snettisham jeweller's hoard (no. 318; Johns 1997). Date: 2nd century AD

Circumstances of discovery The Staffordshire hoard was discovered on the 5th of July, 2009 by Mr Terry Herbert while metal detecting on arable land (now set down to grass) at a site in Staffordshire, land owned and farmed by Mr Fred Johnson. After five days detecting on the site Mr Herbert contacted Mr Duncan Slarke, the local Finds Liaison Officer for the Portable Antiquities Scheme. Mr Slarke subsequently visited the finder at his home and prepared an initial list of 244 bags of finds. These were taken to Birmingham Museum and HM Coroner informed. A decorative pendant made up of six `orange` segments, one is missing. The segments are evenly spaced, at the top is a suspension loop with is a ribbed loop. The segments at the base are fixed by a small flat ring. The segments are decorated alternatively with `8` designs and the other a loop, winding line decoration. Unsure whether the item was cast and if the decoration is filigree.
