Fragment of a medieval gold finger-ring. Only the bezel and shoulders survive, the remainder of the hoop is now missing. The oval bezel is formed of two sections: the base in the 'pie-dish' style with a crimped edge (nicked or serrated, perhaps to resemble filigree), and the upper section or collet, which is concave in profile. The bezel contains a blue stone, probably a sapphire.
See KENT-9F4EA9 (2016T863) and SUR-4E3DB3 (2013T520) for comparable rings. The ring dates to the 13th or early 14th century.
Dimensions: max width:11.5mm; height of bezel: 8mm.

An Anglo-Saxon gold shilling of the 'York' group, type C.
The coin is one of 19 known examples of the 'York' group of Gold Shillings. These were struck in the first half of the seventh century, the first coinage ever made in the town of York. Until recently their attribution to a mint in York was uncertain but recent finds, which show a clear Yorkshire focus, have made this attribution very likely. This find from near York would further strengthen this pattern. It would also be the first coin found so close to the mint since the 1840s discoveries of several shillings in the centre …

Description
A crumpled and torn fragment of embossed sheet gold. Where top and bottom margins survive these appear to have been turned to form straight edges. The embossed decoration comprises alternate rows of bosses and ridges; some of the bosses are dimpled but this may be a function of compression in the soil. Close to one margin are two perforations situated either side of a jagged tear, through which gold wires have been threaded; these seem to be of flattish and not rounded section. A third perforation, also threaded with gold wire, can be seen near to the torn edge of the p…

I have examined three coins reported found in the Great Dunmow area, Essex. The coins are all gold quarter-nobles of King Edward III and will therefore be over 23 carats fine, or about 96% good gold. The quarter-noble was the smallest of the three gold denominations of later medieval English currency, worth 1s.8d. (20-pence), so three were worth 60-pence, or five shillings. Their details are as follows:
Edward III
Third Coinage, second issue (1346-51)
Quarter-noble North 1112 2.10g (JL)

This torc is made from an alloy of gold and silver. The body of the torc is made from 8 'ropes' each made from (possibly) four wires. The wires in each of the 8 ropes are twisted in t…
