Modern (19th century) undecorated gold finger ring; the band is circular with a 'D' shaped cross section. It is 20.17mm in diameter, 4.43mm wide, 1.93mm thick and weighs 6.04 grams. The inside of the band has a line of four marks. The lefthand mark is the maker’s mark formed of two initials (it is unclear whether it is “A.I” or “I.V”) within a rectangle. The next mark is the duty mark, which was only used from 1784-1890. The mark consists of the head of the reigning sovereign in profile. The heads of George III, George IV and William IV all look to the right of the …

A post medieval Venetian coin; a soldino of Agostino Barbarigo (1486-1501) made of an unusual alloy of gold and silver which appears golden coloured instead of the usual silver. This design was used by Barbarigo before he changed over to the new (and much more common) soldino design. However, the style overall is bad, especially the lettering and the mint mark of N over M to the right of the doge is not listed in the detailed catalogue (Barrie Cook pers comm.) This, and the unusual metal suggests that it is some form of contemporary copy or an unknown variety. The coin is discoloured …

A gold undiagnostic finger ring. It has been looked at by Judy Rudoe of the British Museum and the Treasure Registrars. Judy Rudoe commented: 'I can not identify the mark, but I suspect by its form that it is later, so not Treasure'. The finger ring has been bent and distorted out of shape. The hoop has a D-shaped section, no bezel, shoulders or other decoration is evident. The internal surface features the makers mark WA inside a rectangle. This ring is likely to date to the 18th - 19th century.

TREASURE CASE : 2010 T19 Description: A heavily corroded, dark blue glass stud set in a gold frame and backplate. Inlaid into the glass mass is a copper-alloy, pseudo-cloisonné grid which is clearly imitating garnet cloisonné. The plain, upright gold frame is circled by a beaded gold wire, a section of which is missing. The gold backplate is plain but creased and carrying recent scratches. It shows the remains of what looks like an attachment tab, suggesting that the missing portion of the gold wire rim represents an attachment loop that has torn off. Discussion: Studs of …

A plain and elongate gold strip with near parallel sides. One terminal survives, while the other has been torn around 4-7mm from the end. The surviving terminal is loosely folded over, with an external width of 3.5-5mm. The terminal tapers gradually beyond the fold-over, with a flat but slightly convex shaped end and rounded corners. An offset crease, parallel to the terminal-end is visible 2.2-2.5mm from the edge, the strip terminal also being pinched and thinned beyond the crease. Approximately 4mm from the terminal, a pin-hole approximately 0.8mm in diameter perforates the strip. D…

This is a small ingot of gold, approximately circular and large 'button-sized' in plan view, but with slight circumference irregularities. The ingot has a convex under-surface, with marked surface irregularities. This indicates the gold was poured into a small dished mould 7.0-7.5mm deep, possibly clay, sand or stone, and solidifying to take on the reverse contours of the rough and cracked surface. The upper surface is flatter, though domes slightly at the edges, with slight upper surface concavities. In cross-section, the ingot is D-shaped. Dendritic structures in the metal, created …

A very worn and damaged medieval gold quarter noble of Edward III. Most of the coin is illegible, but the letter E at the beginning of the obverse legend allows the ruler to be identified as Edward III. As it is so damaged, it has not been possible to date the coin more closely than to the broad dates of Edward's reign, from 1327 to 1377.

A medieval fitting in the shape of a Gothic letter, possibly the letter "a". On the reverse there are two studs; that were used to fix the letter to a leather or fabric strap. The fitting is gold and dates from the fifteenth or early sixteenth century. Dimensions: length 8 mm, width 6 mm. Consequently, in terms of age and as the object contains a minimum of 10% precious metal it qualifies as Treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996. J P Robinson
