Circumstances of Find
The coins were found on 12/11/2017 by metal detecting on cultivated land. The coins were found close together. No pottery or other material relating to a container was discovered. A scatter of Roman coins are known from the parish but no other Roman material has been reported to the PAS from this field.
There is a note on the Somerset HER (ref: 43281) based on an OS record card of 1965 that: 'A gold follis of Valens, in mint condition, was found when ploughing. The coin has been incorporated into a brooch and is now in the possession of the finder's wife.' …

Two Roman gold ear-rings, one (A) a hook ear-ring, the other (B) a hoop ear-ring.
A) Gold ear-ring of disc, bar and pendant type, its hook slightly distorted, the disc dented and damaged at one side, and one of the two pendants lacking. The embossed disc and double-ridged trapezoidal crossbar are fastened to an integral plain back-plate. The disc conceals the lower part of the hook, which is fastened to its back-plate. Description: The bracelet is formed by two rectangular strips of gold which originally were possibly joined, but this is not certain. The breaks have been more recently been broken possibly through being bent in the first instance. The strips are flat in profile and decorated on one face. The decorated faces have a plain border with two parallel ridges within. These ridges have transverse notches which forms a fine ribbing.
Dimensions: Togetherthe strips are 46.22mm long, 6.19mm wide, 0.67mm thick and together they weigh 1.47g.

An incomplete gold Ear ring of Roman date (AD 100-300). The object is composed of a recurves wire hook which is circular in section. The wire broadens towards the attachment point in the centre of the back of the objects recessed aperture. The main portion of the object is composed of a tear drop shaped plate with a deep ovate recess at it's the centre. This would have held a gem which is now missing. Along the top of the plate are two symmetrical soldered knops from which a circular sectioned wire with recurved loop projects.

Description: A complete but squashed gold finger ring of earlier Roman date. The 'D' sectioned hoop is somewhat slender and has been (deliberately?) broken at its base, the two ends subsequently folded in on each other. The shoulders are plain, expanding into an oval bezel at their apex. The latter is decorated with the faint incised design of a palm frond, but is otherwise plain.

Description: Crumpled and perhaps incomplete piece of gold sheet. It appears roughly circular in shape, but has one original straight side with a slightly burred thickened edge. The ring is crushed and distorted. It has a distinctive construction using a thin sheet of gold. It has a simple D-shaped hoop widening at the shoulders to the bezel. The hoop is faceted, with a central transverse ridge and slightly angled sides, perhaps gently hammered to create sloping slides. A Roman gold ring with an oval bezel (10.5mm wide) with an integrally cast dextrarum iunctio motif of two clasped hands surrounded by an applied border of twisted gold wire, which has become partially detached. The shoulders are triangular, with incised V shaped decoration and scalloped edges. These narrow into the hoop, which is plano-convex, 1.1mm thick and 3.3mm wide at its narrowest point. The ring has been crushed and distorted. Circa 4th century AD.

A distorted gold filigree finger ring of late Roman date, AD 300 - 400. It has a rectangular bezel, and a detached translucent white glass or gem setting. The gem is also rectangular, with one flat face and one convex face, but with facets at the sides. It seems a little too small for the bezel, at 8.3mm long, 7.5mm wide and 2.5mm thick. 0.24g.

A gold Roman circular mount. In the centre of the mount in a raised Julio-Claudian bust, probably of Augustus. On the reverse is the concave reverse of the bust. It is likely that the gold has been rubbed over an object, possible a coin, that depicted the bust. Around the bust is a circle of raised dots. Next around this is a single raised, plain band outside of which is another ring of, this time larger, raised dots. The outer edge of the disc has suffered damage at the 2-5 o'clock and 8-9 o'clock positions.

A crushed gold ring of late Roman date with filigree, 'basket' pattern, and a bezel which may have held a stone or a decorative plaque. The hoop is a thin band of gold sheet, undulating and impressed to resemble basket-work. It is bordered on each side with beaded wire. The shoulders have four pairs of neat, elaborate spirals in gold wire, which descend in size away from the bezel and have gold pellets between. These are applied to a thin gold backing sheet. Surrounding the oval bezel is a roped flange.
