A complete post medieval gold finger ring. The ring is a ‘memento mori’ ring which has an inscribed skull on the exterior of the, otherwise plain, D-shaped band and inscribed on the interior is the phrase ‘Mors mihi lucrum – M – L.L’ followed by a small shield. The phrase translates to ‘Death is my reward’. Diameter 17mm, height 3mm and weight 3g. Discussion: This is a simple ring engraved on the exterior with no more than a skull, in which there is no trace of enamel. Other than the inscription, there are no distinguishing features. Th…

A gold posy ring of post medieval date (circa AD 1650 - 1780). The ring is a plain band, with a shallow D-shaped cross-section. The inscription on the inside of the band reads "A Vertuous wife preserueth life", apparently derived from Proverbs 31. The use of the long form S in 'preserueth' suggests a date prior to 1780 (acccording to Oxford Dictionaries online, that style fell out of use quite rapidly around that date). The inscription is italicised and in sentence case, which may suggest a date later than mid 17th century; prior to this, block capital inscriptions we…

A fragment of a Roman gold coin, probably a contemporary copy of a solidus of the House of Valentinian (AD 364-78) with garbled legends. The reverse depicts a beaded upright, which seems to be part of the pole of the standard.
