A post-medieval gold finger ring with a flat-sectioned hoop, complete but distorted. Externally the hoop is moulded with four quatrefoils, some of which retain white enamel, each with a pair of ridges to either side, the inner pair curved with a pointed outside edge, the outer set crescent-shaped. A gold finger ring, now distorted, with a flat-sectioned hoop with an overlapping soldered join. The hoop is decorated externally with unevenly spaced transverse hammered depressions, which are very worn in one area. There is a crack across the hoop, possibly across an old break which, in antiquity, has been mended internally with gold solder. There are no internal marks. Width of hoop 3mm. Thickness 1.5mm. Original external diameter c. 22mm. Similar to an example in Crummy (1983, 48, fig.50, no1770). Probably Roman.

A 9th century Anglo-Saxon gold ring weighing 1.8g. The loop, which is badly bent, is a thin round-sectioned band, flattened and widening towards the bezel. On the shoulder there is a decoration of minute dots, emphasizing the triangular shape obtained, subdivided into three small triangular fields. The bezel of the ring is round, slightly bent at the lower edge, 1 cm in diameter. The bezel has a double frame: around a plain frame there is a scalloped border, which originally would have been set off by niello.

It is in very good condition and retains its original form. The band consists of fourteen circular bosses with corded borders or twisted rope-like motif. A complete but warped, cast, gold, inscribed, finger-ring or 'posie' dating to the 16th or 17th centuries. Description: The hoop is circular in plan, and is worn and crushed. The external circumference is decorated with a continuous, moulded relief which is difficult to discern due to damage, but has the appearance of a scrolling, foliate, pattern. The inscription, which runs around the internal circumferences, is in uppercase and reads 'VIVE . VT . VIVAS'. The inscription translates literally to "live that you may live" and is given to confer the sentiment: "live life to the fulle…
