A Roman polygonal gold finger-ring, formed of a circular hoop, with seven irregular lozenge-shaped facets of similar dimensions, all plain and undecorated. The surface of this ring is slightly roughly finished. It can be classified as Henig's type IX. A similar finger-ring from 'Crawley area', Hampshire, was reported through the Treasure Act (Treasure Annual Report 2005/6, 64; ref. 133/2006 T150). Another similar ring came from the Chichester area of W.Sussex, 2011T861 [HAMP-F7A356] The age of this ring, and the fact that it is made substantially of gold, means that it qualifie…

Gold finger-ring, now rather distorted, composed of a hoop that is circular in profile and ovoid in section. At the top of the ring the hoop splits into two slightly narrower sections of rilled filigree which loop out and back to form an almond-shaped motif when viewed in plan. On each shoulder is a circular collar each decorated with three punched rings on the upper, visible surface. Inside the almond-shaped motif is a further 'S'-shaped spiral of filigree infilled in each 'S' curve with a gold bead. Further globes of gold have been added to infill the spaces between the spiral and t…

Treasure reference no. 2013 T706: two fragments of folded sheet gold, found together and presumably once part of the same object. Fragment A is sub-rectangular and appears to have one original edge. Fragment B is also sub-rectangular and has been clearly folded at least four times. The longer edge is original, as appears to be the outer edge, indicating that this was once a flat, rectangular sheet. The surface is difficult to see owing to the poor state of preservation, but it appears to have had some kind of pressed decoration. In some ways this item resembles Roman lamella.

A Roman gold finger-ring with solid stepped rectangular bezel. The hoop, distorted and incomplete, comprises an oval-sectioned, ribbed rod, smooth on the outer face. At the shoulders it is fused to the base of the bezel and enclosed by three pellets. The bezel has a short two-line inscription incised on its lightly-cambered surface. A slightly tapering gold tube with coiled wire decoration attached to it near the wider end and about two-thirds of the way down. The wider end is closed by a flat plate, secured from coming out by the ends of the tube being bent over. The plate now sits at an angle, with one side pushed slightly down the tube, but it would appear that it originally sat square to the end of the tube. Attached to the plate is a small loop, of fairly flat cross-section. The tube is bent slightly to one side towards its narrower end, the edges of which are folded in. Roman gold finger ring set with an intaglio. The hoop is rather worn and distorted, but is made up of a flat and wide band of metal, broadly circular in profile, which expands to triangular shoulders. The flattened bezel has an ovoid box setting soldered to it, which contains a dark grey stone intaglio (probably nicolo). The design is rather degraded, but shows a figure of probably a cupid (there may be a semblance of a wing) leaning forwards with his trailing leg straight and his front leg bent. He turns his head back towards a cock standing behind him. In the cupid's outstretched ha…

A small Roman hexagonal gold finger-ring set with a red jasper intaglio. The hoop, now slightly squashed, has broad angular shoulders. The oval intaglio is set flush with the surface of the rectangular bezel. The intaglio is finely-engraved with a combination: a bearded Silenus head conjoined back-to-back to an inverted, clean-shaven, youthful head, probably Pan. The sinuous motif that separates/ unites the heads is probably an elephant's trunk with stylised palm branch, but it may also be 'read' as facial hair and a long hair lock for the Silenus. A gold necklace clasp, dating to the Roman period. The clasp comprises a single circular-section tapering piece of gold wire which has been bent at one end to form a hook. The terminal has then been bent back on itself to create a decorative curl. At the other end, the wire has been bent into a loop, with the loop secured by wrapping the wire around itself six times. Threaded through the loop is a fragmentary further chain link formed from two pieces of circular-section gold wire. The clasp measures 19mm in length, 5mm in width at the loop end. The clasp weighs 0.91 grams.
