Gold finger ring. Cast band of rounded section, gradually thickened between shoulders and a conical collet of height 5.4mm with a bevelled upper rim. Angled moulded ribs flanking it may mark the attachment of the collet, which is now empty. The band is now slightly distorted, probably overemphasising its original height. Object type: CASTING WASTE
Broad period: IRON AGE
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A gold object of uncertain date or function, 25.2mm in length and composed of a pale alloy, likely electrum or a low quality gold. The object is flat but twisted and tapers to a curved end and with a ragged break across the wider end. The surface on both flat sides is unfinished and without evidence of working; it also demonstrates a texture suggesting that it is a cooled melt. Possibly a fragment of casting waste or a partially melted ingot from us metal working.

Treasure case 2022 T485 Description:  A complete gold posy finger ring dating to the post medieval period (c.AD 1580-1650). The ring is comprised of a circular band with a D-shaped section. The outer edge is decorated with a repeating design of raised annulets joined by a connecting line. The interior of the band presents an inscription in italic script reading: Far of yet not forgot. A ribbon or thin bar of gold 73 mm long, 9 mm wide and 1.25 mm thick with originally a curved profile on an arch of an approximate diameter of 80-90 mm, but sharply bent 43 mm from the squared off end. The object appears to have been cut from of a larger object. The squared off end is probably the original end of the end, the other is less regularly finished off.  The object is relatively poorly finished compared to other prehistoric gold objects and has ample evidence for hammering and working across all surfaces.  Scientific analysis across the surface of the object suggest…

A squashed and bent gold finger-ring of uncertain date. This artefact weighs 6.39g and is formed of a single band that forms a continuous hoop without sign of a join or solder line. This band has an oval cross-section, though the inner surface is slightly flatter than the convex curve of the external surface. The band has a width of 3.9mm and thickness of 1.8mm. Probably originally circular, the hoop has been squashed so that the irregular oval form occupies the external measurements of 25.0mm x 19.7mm. The brooch is a gold version of a fibula or ‘safety pin’ type brooch commonly known as a Birdlip Type Brooch or Beaked Bow Brooch. The brooch is bent and buckled, probably in recent times by agricultural machinery.  The spring and pin are missing. The brooch was originally made in at least three pieces: the body of the brooch; the spring and pin; and a small roughly triangular plate across the rear of the catch plate.   The spring was probably fixed to body of the bow with resin or glue.  Traces of a black residue are present where the spring was attac…

Near complete Late Iron Age silver La Tene III bow brooch of 1st Century BC date. The brooch is missing the pin, but otherwise is in good condition. The spring stems from the rear of the head in a right angle and coils twice before the chord is anchored beneath the spring. The spring is broken as it rises, probably to coil for another turn before the pin. The head of the bow is unusual, consisting of a domed semi-circular plate with raised ribs at the base, which continue along the sides of the bow to the foot. The bow is sub-rectangular in profile and is decorated with a central rib, …
