A clipped imitation of a medieval gold quarter noble of Edward III (1327-1377). The obverse shows annulets on the cusps of the tressure and a lis in the centre of the reverse suggesting the prototype was a quarter noble of Edward III's Treaty Period, the annulets seen in the 'Transitional Series' of 1361-3 (North 1224), the lis seen in the Treaty Series of 1363-9 (North 1243-4). However, there are a number of differences: the inscriptions on both obverse and reverse vary from the standard legends although are both legible and literate, e.g. GRACIA is spelt in full…

Dimensions: 29 x 17.5mm and 2.5 mm in section. Weight 3.98g Discussion: The form of the ring is consistent with Viking manufacture, although a ring of only two twisted rods would be unusual. Modern imitations of Viking jewellery are not uncommon and are often inspired by Viking designs rather than direct copies, so the possibility that this fits into that category cannot be excl…

Such coins were produced in fairly good gold at the beginning of the century, but with the gold contained declining as the century progressed, with the gold increasingly replaced by silver. The design on this example is relatively crude, and could represent either a Merovingian coin or an imitation produced elsewhere. Its gold content is c. 41-4…
