Description: Small penannular ring, round-sectioned, with narrow stripes of yellow and paler gold. The decoration is very worn but clearly visible internally, close to one terminal. The ring comprises a gold covering over a base metal core. Some dirt and corrosion blocking gap between terminals.

A complete gold posy finger-ring with black enamel inlay decoration. The finger-ring weighs 4.25g. The band that forms the circular hoop has a 'D' shaped cross-section being convexly curved on the outer surfaces. The width of the hoop is 4.2mm and the thickness of the band is 1.5mm. The hoop has an external diameter of 20.1mm.

Since at least the middle of the nineteenth century (Waterton 1859, cf. OED) rings engraved on interior or exterior with an amatory or affectionate sentiment has been known as a posy-ring (alternative spellings are posie, posey etc.). The hoop has an external diameter of 19.7mm; width 3mm; thickness 1mm; weight 2.37g.
The ring has not undergone any cleaning or conservation. It is complete.
To judge from its colour and weight, and visual comparison with other gold rings and brooches in the collections of the Department of History & Archaeology, the item is gold (over 10%).

The ring consists of a gold wire, circular in section, which has been formed into a loop, now bent out of shape. The wire tapers towards its terminal ends.
