A Byzantine gold solidus adapted into a pendant by way of a gold strip soldered to the top of the coin. The pendant was designed to be worn with the reverse visible as the loop is attached at 12 o'clock on the reverse, 5 o'clock on the obverse, rendering the portraits upside down.
Coin: gold solidus of Heraclius and Heraclius Constantine, minted at Constantinople.

TREASURE CASE: 2013 T466
Description: A gold medieval pendant roundel with a square shaped central bezel set with an amethyst. The pendant frame has been formed from twisted gold wire and has four suspension loops which have been soldered onto the frame. Three of the suspension loops have chain link attachments which would have once held a terminal attachment, possibly a pearl. The bezel is attached by a pin on the reverse to a splayed sun motif which has been soldered onto the inside frame of the pendant.
Discussion: The British Museum has two very similar pendants in the colle…

Description: An early medieval disc pendant made from a plain polished sheet of gold with a border of well-made beaded wire (diameter 0.8mm). At the top, this border is interrupted by a separate cylindrical suspension loop 4.6mm wide, made from gold sheet decorated with six grooves. This is cut into a long point on the reverse, where it is soldered on; the grooves respect the tapered shape, indicating that they were made after the strip had been cut to shape. The reverse is not otherwise decorated, but has some scratches.
On the front there is a central motif of a cross with taperi…

Description: Bulla pendant made from a single piece of gold. Both faces are circular and slightly domed, with narrow flat flanges around the edges which are tightly pressed, perhaps soldered, together. They are linked by a strip 3.1mm wide which was bent round to form a suspension loop; this loop is identically decorated on both faces. It is clear that the decoration of the loop was done before cutting out the metal, as in the centre (at the top) there are four ridges and three grooves, but towards the base of the loop, as the metal flares slightly, there are six or even seven grooves…

Treasure reference 2013 T188: A gold Viking pendant in the form of 'Thor's hammer'. The pendant is in the form of a double-headed hammer with an elongated pentagonal head. The head is rectangular in cross-section. From the centre of the head extends an integral tapering rectangular-sectioned shaft. The terminal of the shaftis narrowed to form a suspension loop.
Both faces of the axe are decorated with punched motifs resembling quatrefoils or perhaps miniature axes. All sides of the shaft are also decorated in a similar manner.
Similar decoration is seen on a silver Thor's ha…

An early Anglo-Saxon openwork circular gold pendant with a four-spiral swastika-type or tetraskele pattern in the center. The swastika appears to have been stamped from a single piece of gold sheet. It is an equilateral cross with four arms all bent round on themselves anti-clockwise to create spirals. This central design is surrounded by three concentric circles formed by a single beaded wire, now quite worn, spiralling round; this is in turn surrounded by a separate wire, similarly beaded but now extremely worn, creating the outer ring. A corrugated loop with three grooves and four …

Description: A small circular gold object, probably a pendant. The object has a backplate apparently made from a number of smaller pieces of gold, which is framed by a gold strip set on edge, 1.5mm wide, which runs around the edge to a butted join at the top. Within this is a two-ply twist of gold wires, c. 0.5mm in diameter, which forms an inner frame and also has a joint at the top. Here the twist meets three more two-ply twists which extend from the top edge of the disc vertically down into the middle. This appears to form a neck, as it ends in a raised animal head made from solder…

Description: Early Anglo-Saxon gold disc pendant made from a relatively thick back-plate onto which are soldered all the other components. In the centre is a collar formed from a vertical strip of sheet gold, retaining a shiny translucent orange/brown cabochon containing air bubbles, identified by Raman spectroscopy (see below) as glass. The collar is now cracked and has a lumpy appearance, possibly some gold solder acting as a repair.
Arranged around the setting are ten beaded-wire heart shapes, either touching each other or nearly so; the points touch the collar and the inward-sp…

Description: Anglo-Saxon gold and glass pendant dating to the 7th century. The pendant is approximately square with rounded corners, tapering very slightly from top to bottom. It has a gold backplate and an upright collar, and is set with glass in very poor condition, with only shattered fragments remaining. The collar is a plain strip of gold set at right angles to the backplate, with a well-hidden seam at the right-hand end of the suspension loop. This is then covered by second sheet of gold whose edges are partially enfolded by the top of the cell wall. Treasure case 2012 T243: Acquired by Somerset Museums
Description
The object comprises a gold coin set within an iron mount. The coin was produced in central-southern Britain during the late Iron Age, probably between about 40 BC and 20 BC. Although little detail of the original design survives, it is an example of a coin-type known as 'British Qb'. These coins are traditionally ascribed to the Atrebates, a people thought to have lived in the Hampshire area in the Iron Age. In fact, find-spots now suggest that these coins may also have been produced further to the west in Gloucest…

Description:
Small circular gold pendant of seventh-century date, now missing its setting. The pendant has a gold backplate with very rough and ragged edges, to which an upright collar has been soldered. The collar would originally have held the setting in place, and is set at an angle suggesting that the setting was perhaps a cabochon-cut stone. The junction between the collar and the backplate is covered and concealed by a ring of very neatly made beaded gold wire 1.0mm in diameter; the beads are narrow ridges rather than globular spheres. The beaded wire circle is interrupted by …

Late Bronze Age gold pendant: one end of a slightly bent round-sectioned shank has been hammered into a D-sectioned loop, while the other expands into a conical terminal on which another object may have swivelled.
Formerly described as probably Roman, it has reassigned, by Caroline Barton and Ben Roberts of the British Museum, to the Late Bronze Age on the basis of its similarity to a copper alloy example in the Boughton Malherbe (Kent) hoard (PAS KENT-15A293). Length 34mm. Width of loop 5.5mm. Diameter of shank 2 - 1.5mm. Diameter of terminal 3mm. Weight 1.89g. 9th century BC.

A small gold sphere decorated with a single band of gold wire around the circumference. This has a line of arches of gold wire on both sides extending approximately halfway up each hemisphere. Above these arches are multiple small pellets covering the top and bottom of the sphere. At the top is a small loop formed from gold wire with a piece of bent gold wire through it, possibly the start of a chain or larger loop to enable the object to be attached to a chain.
Bears some resemblance to Tudor dress pins but the fitting/ attachment loop suggests it might be a decorative dress accessory.

A Roman solid gold pendant in the shape of a phallus. The pendant has a broken and distorted grooved suspension loop and a simple representation of the male genitals, comprising testicles (one broken and missing) and erect penis, the glans depicted by a demarcating groove.
The pendant is similar to, though more rudimentary than, another solid gold example from Braintree, Essex (ESS-0CDDC1; Treasure case PEE 81). A more finely detailed hollow gold example has also been reported from Hillingdon, Norfolk (NMS-94CA46; 2011 T78). The phallus was a powerful apotropaic symbol throughout th…

Description:
Small gold pendant set with a piece of amber. The backplate is drop-shaped, with a broken extension at the top which originally continued up to form the corrugated or ribbed suspension loop. This has two broad longitudinal grooves and three ridges, and the far end is cut to a point and soldered to the backplate. The ends of the break are in quite different condition; the part contiguous with the backplate is crumpled and squashed, perhaps torn, but the end contiguous with the rest of the loop appears to have been cut straight through. It is possible that the loop was mad…
