A fragment of gold, likely hack gold from a penannular bracelet of Bronze Age date, possibly c.1100-850 BC. Description: The object is broadly 'axe-shaped' with a sub-circular terminal that tapers to a flat rectangular cross section. This was likely achieved by cutting and hammering. The tapered end has been cut, indicated by a bright rugged cut. The terminal also appears to have been cut from a larger object and then hammered smooth. The gold has a rich, bright yellow colour.  Measurements: Length: 14.77 mm; Width: 7.03 mm; Thickness: 6.43 …

A complete, droplet of almost pure gold, probably casting waste of uncertain date. Length: 10.23mm; width: 7.41mm; 4.98mm and weight: 2.8g.  Non-destructive X-ray fluorescence analysis indicated a surface composition of approximately 95-97% gold, 1-2% silver and the rest being copper.

Description:  A small gold ingot/hack gold ingot, of possible Bronze Age to Early-medieval date. The ingot is roughly sub-rectangular in section and in plan with no clear original edges each being irregular and slightly ragged. One long edge is slightyl bevelled indicating where the item might have been clipped. Dimensions: The ingot is 12.2mm long, 9.9mm wide, 0.8mm thick and weighs 0.93 grams. Discussion:  There are few diagnostic features on this fragment. However, similar examples on the database include IOW-07210E, HAMP-8B1C5E and CORN-ECECE2 suggested to date to the B…

Description The object is a mostly plain bar shape being rectangular in plan and in cross section while in profile it is very slightly concave. One terminal is flat and square however the opposite narrow edge appears to have been cut its edge being bevelled into a point that looks triangular in side profile. The bar is gold in colour. Dimensions: The bar is 21.6mm long, 6.2mm wide, 3.2mm thick and weighs 5.85 grams. Discussion:  Barring the cut mark on the ingot there are no diagnostic indicators for the date of manufacture. This is well evidenced by a number of similar ingots …

An ingot of probable gold and silver. It is broken, at the break is a 'nick' which extends into the ingot for approx. 2mm and then the break occurs under this. The other end, which is an original terminal, is slightly bulbous. It is a pale gold colour and may be an alloy rather then a pure metal. Some flow marks are apparent as a result of casting, and the surfaces are all pitted, reminiscent of being cast in sand. Ingots such as these can be dated to the late Bronze Age (see Treasure Annual Report 1998-9, Item 11 and 12), although they are also found in the early medieva…

Description:  A small rectangular fragment of a cut gold bar with a dating range from Roman to Early-Medieval (c. AD100-AD700).  The bar is rectangular in plan with one end slightly tapering.  The non-tapering end appears to be roughly cut.  There are scratch marks and abrasions on the surface.  Dimensions:  L: 11.33mm, W: 3.74mm, T: 2.72, Weight: 1.57g. Discussion:  Small rectangular bars cut for bullion ingots are known from the 2nd century and 6th-7th centuries.  Examples cited by the British Museum curators who advised on the item (Richard …

A small irregular fragment of gold sheet metal or foil, 12mm long by 7.9mm wide and 0.3mm thick. Both sides are undecorated aside from a line scored along one edge, which may represent marking out for cutting. It is unclear whether this object represents a fragment of a finished item or is an offcut from goldworking.

A ribbon or thin bar of gold 73 mm long, 9 mm wide and 1.25 mm thick with originally a curved profile on an arch of an approximate diameter of 80-90 mm, but sharply bent 43 mm from the squared off end. The object appears to have been cut from of a larger object. The squared off end is probably the original end of the end, the other is less regularly finished off.  The object is relatively poorly finished compared to other prehistoric gold objects and has ample evidence for hammering and working across all surfaces.  Scientific analysis across the surface of the object suggest…

14 droplets and fragments of gold and silver This interesting collection of material includes 9 molten droplets, 2 fragments that have been cut from ingots and 3 fragments of twisted wire. The objects in the collection are made from both gold (of different colours), silver and in one case lead with tin. One molten droplet clearly contains a partially melted piece of gold wire fused within it. Initially it was considered that these objects might have come from the manufacture of Iron Age gold and silver objects. Analysis of the metal content of the droplets and other pieces, …

Gold metalworking debris or ingot fragment. An irregularly sub-rectangular fragment of cast gold which has been hammered flat, with one slightly concave edge, all other sides are broken with a crystalline appearance. Reported as from the same location as a socketed axe dated to 1000-800 BC. As one of two items of similar date and recovered from the same find spot, this object technically fulfills criteria for a 'hoard' of two or more metal prehistoric objects found together, and is therefore to be submitted to the Treasure process, ref. 2022 T357. Suggested date: Late Bronze Age, 1000…

Description: Complete gold ingot, long with rounded ends and oval cross-section. One surface is smooth with a few large dents; the other is pitted with very many small dents. One end is slightly wider and substantially thicker due to a rise in the pitted surface; the smoother surface is fairly flat. The colour is very slightly pale, suggesting a relatively impure gold. Dimensions: Length, 40.9mm. Maximum width, 13.3mm. Maximum thickness, 8.8mm. Weight 37.39g.  Discussion: This ingot is quite distinctive; it is long, with rounded ends and cross-section, o…

Fragment of a gold ingot, one end rounded and thick, the other broken away jaggedly and transversely. The two broad surfaces are flat and smooth except adjacent to the break where a rounded hammer mark of the full width is visible on both. The edge, convex and less smooth, contains cracks and fissures, some of which may be the result of post-depositional damage.

A gold fragment of irregular shape which has breaks and fracturing all around. One side is broadly flat; on the opposite side is a small flat area which is at an angle. A possible Early Medieval (Viking) to Modern gold ingot/hack gold, dated to the mid 9th to mid 20th Centuries, AD 850-2000. The ingot is roughly sub-rectangular in shape with one end rounded and the other broken and flat. Dimensions: length: 13.14mm; width: 9.67mm; thickness: 5.83mm; weight: 4.16g. Gold ingots are traditionally difficult to date out of context but they are often attributed to a Viking date. The Vikings had a bullion economy where the purity and weight of the metal were more important than the form. Although this bullion economy primarily utilised silver it …

A complete gold ingot of uncertain date.  Description: The ingot is cuboid in shape and rectangular in cross-section with four distinct faces and edges. The terminals are rounded, however one is thicker and more irregularly-shaped than the other. The surfaces of the top and bottom facets of the ingot show some splitting or cracking, more so on one than the other. This less blemished facet also dips slightly from the edges and has a more irregular surface with many striations. The side facets are relatively smooth in comparison but, like all four facets, d…

Found whilst metal detecting on cultivated land at a depth of 3 inches. Gold ingot of probable Bronze Age date. The find is a slightly bent cylindrical length of gold. One end is complete and flat, the other is slightly twisted and was probably broken by hammering a dent and breaking it across the thinnest place. Hammer marks are still evident.  Dimensions: Dimensions: 56.0mm in length; 3.8mm in diameter or thickness, 9.65g in weight. Discussion: A similar ingot was found in Horsham, West Sussex and is recorded on the PAS database as SUSS-66EEF6 (2008 T329), which was…
