Surface metal analysis conducted at the British Museum indicated an approximate gold content of 79%. The ingot weighs 58.2 grams. The ingot is in the form of a narrow bar of flattened oval section with roughly rounded ends; length, 76 mm; width, 10 mm; thickness 6 mm. It is fairly smooth on one side and pitted on the other, especially along one edge. The form is typical of gold and silver ingots of varying sizes of the Early Medieval period found in both the British Isles, on the Continent and in Scandinavia, although gold examples are far less common. They were cast in simple, o…

Gold ingot of unspecified date. Length 15.5mm, diameter c.8mm. Weight 8.03g. The ingot has eight longitudinal facets of uneven widths and is sub-round in cross-section. At either end there is an old coarse break. One of the ends has three small smooth areas which appear to have been created when a piece was chopped or cut off.

Short length of rod originally of circular section of about 5 mm diameter. Both ends have been hammered, cut and finally torn. The hammer facets taper back and almost meet in the middle. The thinned blunter ends have steep 'cut' facets and are partly rough-fractured. The undamaged parts of the sides have slight longitudinal facets and fine striations from the original finishing. Such a small and undiagnostic fragment cannot be identified definitively. However, all the features, including the mode of fragmentation and the metal composition are consistent with this being part of a Bro…

Gold fragment of a strip raised into a lip on both of the edges of each face. The flanged end is flattened and has been sheared off with a blunt 'cold' chisel which has caused the end to expand. The other end of the fragment is broken and worn. Treasure report written by Gillian Varndell: Roughly trapezoidal fragment of gold; the broader end is flattened and cut (or flattened and broken off) and there is a rough break at the opposite, narrower end. The long edges have slight flanges, more marked on one face; the 'flange' at the narrow edge is probably a result of breaking.

Cast gold ingot of roughly D-shaped section. A slightly larger but similarly shaped example from Liddington, Wiltshire was declared to be Treasure and is featured in the Treasure Annual Report 1998-9. One datable associated find of ingots of this type is from Mooghaun, Co. Clare, where other items in the hoard are known to date to the Late Bronze Age (the ingots are missing but there are casts). A small Late Bronze Age hoard from Llanarmon-yn-Iâl, Denbighshire contained a similar example of comparable size to the Wembury find. The simplicity of the form and the lack of archaeolog…

Small, cast gold 'finger-ingot', roughly plano-convex in section. Cut marks are visible (possibly done with a chisel in antiquity). Comparable pieces were found in a hoard from Mooghaun, County Clare, Ireland, where other items are datable to the Late Bronze Age. This example is probably of a similar date.

A small ingot of gold of Unknown date. The ingot is sub-rectangular in cross-section, tapering and faceted. Rounded at each end. 7-8 small cut marks on one edge at the narrower end. Length 20.5mm, Width 6.4mm, Thickness 4.7mm. Weight 4.81g. Treasure case no. 2006 T402 (determined not to be Treasure). It is not possible to give a date to this ingot. It may or may not be more than 300 years old, therefore, due to the undiagnostic nature of the find, it can not be securely dated to pre-1706 and as such falls outside the provisions of the Treasure Act 1996.

One surface is rough and pitted, the other more rounded. This may be an ingot or part of a partially melted object of unknown type or date. Discussion: The shape of this piece of gold is not diagnostic. There is no evidence from what period in the past this object dates from. Conclusion: The object is made of gold but there is no evidence to state if it was made more than 300 years old…

A small fragment from a possible gold ingot, this object is difficult to date with any certainty without more precise information from the context from which it came, if any. It is probably of prehistoric date and was found in an area well known for both its Neolithic and Early Bronze Age monuments and a series of Iron Age settlements. As such, this item is more than likely a prehistoric object, older than 300 years, and is therefore probably Treasure.
